The Ultimate Fighting Championship held its first event of 2023 tonight at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card was headlined by a light heavyweight matchup between Sean “Tarzan” Strickland, who stepped in to compete as a replacement on very short notice, and Nassourdine Imavov.

Deep Jewels Flyweight Champion Rin Nakai’s hopes to return to the UFC will have to wait, as she will remain in Japan for her next fight. Nakai is scheduled to face Aoi Kuriyama in a flyweight matchup at Deep Jewels 40, which will take place on February 18th at Shinjuku FACE in Tokyo.

Deep Jewels officials announced the bout on Monday. Nakai, who recently signed with new management, has not fought since she won the vacant Deep Jewels flyweight title this past May. Kuriyama was unbeaten in 2022, earning decision wins in both of her bouts under the Deep Jewels banner.

Seika Izawa held on to the top spot in the women’s super atomweight rankings with a razor-thin Split Decision victory on December 31st at Rizin Fighting Federation 40 in Saitama, Japan. Izawa defeated Si Woo Park in the finals of the 2022 Rizin FF Women’s Super Atomweight Grand Prix.

In December UFC action, Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz fought to a Split Draw in their UFC 282 main event, which had been intended to crown a new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. At middleweight, Jared “The Killa Gorilla” Cannonier edged Sean “Tarzan” Strickland at UFC Fight Night 216.

Rizin FF and Deep Jewels champ Seika Izawa added a third championship to her collection with a close and hard-fought Split Decision victory tonight at Rizin Fighting Federation 40 in Saitama, Japan. Izawa narrowly edged out rival Si Woo “Korean Queen Bee” Park in a closely-contested rematch.

Izawa, who previously won both the Rizin FF Women’s Super Atomweight Championship and the Deep Jewels Strawweight Championship, captured Rizin’s women’s super atomweight grand prix title with tonight’s win. Post-fight, she expressed an interest in facing Invicta FC ace Jillian DeCoursey.

Seven fights are now official for Deep Jewels 40, which will take place on February 18, 2023 at Shinjuku FACE in Tokyo, Japan. The first Deep Jewels event of the new year features a strawweight matchup between rising star Namiko “Hime” Kawabata and highly-touted prospect Machi Fukuda.

Deep Jewels officials announced the Kawabata-Fukuda fight and six more bouts today. Among them is a 49kg super atomweight showdown between former two-time atomweight title challenger Hikaru Aono and popular Deep Jewels star Kate “Lotus” Oyama, who is coming off of a win in September.
