Akano travelled south to Osaka alongside long-time friend and AACC trainer Megumi Fujii, as the pair took the opportunity to move away from the Tokyo region amidst ongoing warnings of radiation leaks from the north. Needing just 40 seconds to defeat Yonezawa, Akano earned her 17th pro victory.

This weekend featured a pair of women’s bouts showcasing four prospects at 125 pounds in two very different areas of the world. Rising star Barb “Little Warrior” Honchak picked up her third victory as a professional and eleventh overall by defeating Amber “A.J.” McAvoy at Wright Fights 2 in Missouri.
Meanwhile, Strikeforce veteran Maiju “Maki” Kujala rebounded from a pair of losses by dominating England’s Emma Watson at Fight Festival 30. Kujala, who lost a close decision to Miesha Tate last year, earned her fifth pro win with the first-round stoppage, which came in her native country of Finland.

Leading amateur promotion Tuff-N-Uff held its third event of 2011 Saturday night at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event, Edmond “The Albanian Assassin” Xhelili avenged his lone loss by defeating Jason Richey for the Tuff-N-Uff Middleweight Championship.
Tuff-N-Uff’s inaugural 145-pound women’s champion was also crowned as Reno, Nevada’s Taylor “No Mercy” Stratford impressively submitted Ashlee “The Terminator” Evans-Smith. The victory was Stratford’s second in eight days, as she earned an Ultimate Reno Combat title last weekend.

The mixed martial arts industry has undergone a drastic change today with the announcement that Ultimate Fighting Championship parent company, Zuffa, LLC, has purchased the UFC’s biggest competitor, Strikeforce. UFC President Dana White first announced the news to MMAFighting.com.
While White stated that Strikeforce will continue to operate with “business as usual” and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker still at the helm, news of the acquisition caught fighters and other Strikeforce employees off-guard. The San Jose-based Strikeforce is expected to continue to air on Showtime.

Shark Fights 14 took place tonight at the Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas. The HDNet-televised event was headlined by a middleweight battle between UFC veterans Matt “Suave” Horwich and Danillo “Indio” Villefort, and served as the first of many Shark Fights events that will air on the network.
In the co-main event of the evening, two of the top 125-pound female fighters in the world squared off when pound-for-pound standout Tara LaRosa battled Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm in a fight three years in the making. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the televised Shark Fights card.

After a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan at approximately 2:45 P.M. local time, Jewels has cancelled “Twelfth Ring.” The event had been scheduled to take place this evening at Shinjuku FACE in Tokyo, but the country is currently reeling from earthquake damage.
It is currently unknown whether “Twelfth Ring” will be postponed or cancelled outright. Japan is presently under a severe tsunami warning, with threats of an additional large-scale earthquake and powerful aftershocks to follow as well. MMARising.com extends its best wishes to Japan at this time.
A new promotion in Japan, lead by former Pride Fighting Championships president Nobuyuki Sakakibara and vice president Hiroyuki Kato, will hold its first event on April 18th. Dubbed the “Japan Cup,” the event will feature the first and second rounds of an eight-man bantamweight grand prix.
A source close to the new promotion confirmed details of the April event to MMARising.com on Wednesday. Current plans call for the tournament final to be held in May. The tournament winner, as well as other semi-finalists, will move on to compete in DREAM’s world bantamweight tournament.

Valkyrie Flyweight Champion Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi will make her Pancrase debut on April 3rd when she takes on promotional veteran “Windy” Tomomi Sunaba. The featured bout will be part of Pancrase Impressive Tour 3 at Differ Ariake in Tokyo, Japan, and will be contested at 115.5 pounds.
Yamaguchi last fought on November 28th in a Valkyrie title rematch against Kyoko Takabayashi, which ended in a controversial Draw after three rounds. With Valkyrie’s future uncertain, Yamaguchi recently became a freelance fighter and will open a new chapter in her career when she faces Sunaba.
