After former IFL standout Rory Markham was forced to withdraw from his UFC 108 welterweight bout with top contender Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann, Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts Academy prospect Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann is now expected to step up to face Kampmann.
Volkmann made his UFC debut at UFC 106 on November 21st and lost a close decision to dark horse Paulo Thiago, but put on a solid showing in defeat. A victory over Kampmann would immediately propel Volkmann into contender status in the division as he eyes UFC gold.
Kampmann (15-3-0) was one victory away from a title shot before he was quickly stopped by British knockout artist Paul “Semtex” Daley at UFC 103. Now forced to battle his way back into contention, Kampmann will face a tough test in Volkmann and would suffer a significant setback if he is defeated by the newcomer.
Volkmann (9-1-0) reigned undefeated until his decision loss to Thiago, but he showcased well-rounded skills in his UFC debut and is clearly a legitimate threat to many in the division. With solid wrestling and six submission wins to his credit, Volkmann may hold a slight edge in the ground game over Kampmann.
The fight, which will likely remain on the undercard if signed, is critical for both fighters and a loss will be detrimental. Kampmann will aim to prove that he belongs among the top contenders in the division, while Volkmann seeks to prove his worth to the UFC.
UFC 108: “Evans vs Silva” takes place on January 2, 2010 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
