UFC Fight Night 38: “Shogun vs Henderson 2” Results & RecapThe Ultimate Fighting Championship came to Nélio Dias Gymnasium in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil tonight for UFC Fight Night 38: “Shogun vs Henderson 2.” The event was headlined by a light heavyweight rematch between ex-champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Dan “Hendo” Henderson.

Also on the card, Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira battled C.B. “The Doberman” Dollaway in the middleweight co-feature. Leonardo Santos faced off against “Stormin'” Norman Parke in lightweight action and Fabio Maldonado took on Gian Villante at 205. MMARising.com has play-by-play for the main card.

 

Dan “Hendo” Henderson vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Round 1:
Rua landed occasional right hands and leg kicks in a cautious opening two minutes. Henderson landed a left hook and an uppercut in close, but Rua broke away. The fighters traded punches and Rua scored with a knee to the body. He kicked at Henderson’s leg, but Henderson dropped him briefly with a counter hook. Henderson pressed forward and Rua floored him with a vicious one-two combo. He swarmed on Henderson with more punches and mounted him before the bell, but Henderson narrowly survived until the end of the round. 10-8 Rua.

Round 2:
Rua kicked at Henderson’s leg and punched his way into a clinch in the second round. Hard punches were exchanged and Rua easily avoided a sloppy takedown attempt. Rua knocked him down with an uppercut, but Henderson recovered quickly. Rua landed short punches from the top and Henderson defended well. The fighters were stood up and neither landed anything significant before the bell. 10-9 Rua.

Round 3:
Right hands landed for both fighters in the opening minute of round three. Henderson tried for a takedown and he pulled Rua into a massive right hand that badly broke Rua’s nose. Rua collapsed and rolled backwards as Henderson rushed in with more punches. He landed a series of hammerfists and the fight was waved off.

Winner: Dan Henderson by TKO (Punches) at 1:31 of round three. He improves to 30-11-0.

 

C.B. “The Doberman” Dollaway vs Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira

Round 1:
Ferriera rushed forward with punches right away, but Dollaway backed him up with a counter right hand. Ferreira regained his composure and pressed forward once again. Dollaway avoided his punches and landed a right-left combo that sent him crashing to the mat. Ferreira held on, but Dollaway put him away with a barrage of follow-up punches on the ground.

Winner: C.B. Dollaway by KO (Punches) at 0:39 of round one. He improves to 14-5-0.

 

Leonardo Santos vs “Stormin'” Norman Parke

Round 1:
Parke pressed the action with kicks to the lead leg and body early on, but Santos landed a nice right hook in return. Time was called after Parke was poked in the eye. Action resumed and both men landed kicks. Parke held Santos against the cage, but Santos tied him up and the fighters were separated. Santos countered a left hook with a solid kick to the body. He followed with right hooks and a knee to the body in close. 10-9 Santos.

Round 2:
More kicks landed for Parke early in round two and he clinched against the cage once again. The fighters were separated and both landed right hands. Parke tried for a takedown and referee Wernei Cardoso docked him one point for holding on to Santos’s shorts. In the latter half of the round, Parke worked for more takedowns and he landed some nice standing elbows. Parke kept the pressure on Santos with punches in the clinch and he took Santos’s back before the bell. 9-9.

Round 3:
Parke mixed up his strikes with punches and body kicks in round three. Santos tried to counter with a Thai clinch, but Parke avoided damage and landed uppercuts in close. Parke pinned Santos against the fence and the crowd grew restless. The fighters were separated and an exchange of power punches briefly brought the crowd back to life. Parke clinched again and attempted to throw Santos to the ground. Santos stayed on his feet until Parke got him down to a knee at the bell. 10-9 Parke.

Result: Majority Draw (29-27 [Santos], 28-28, 28-28) after three rounds. Santos moves to 12-3-1, while Parke is now 19-2-1.

 

Fabio Maldonado vs Gian Villante

Round 1:
Villante took Maldonado down right away and transitioned to back control as Maldonado rose to his knees. Maldonado stood and Villante kneed him in the thigh. He took Maldonado back down and landed short strikes from side control. Villante kept Maldonado pinned down until the end of the round. 10-9 Villante.

Round 2:
Villante staggered Maldonado with a left hook early in round two, but Maldonado recovered and he landed a series of stiff jabs. Villante took him down and landed more knees to the thighs. He took Maldonado’s back, but Maldonado countered with reverse elbows and stood. Villante opened a huge gash on Maldonado’s head with a knee and Maldonado responded by peppering him with jabs and body shots. Maldonado mixed up his punches by targeting the head and body with quick strikes. Villante slowed down and Maldonado punched to the liver. He wobbled Villante with a combination late in the round. 10-9 Maldonado.

Round 3:
Maldonado flurried to the head and body of Villante in the opening minute of round three. He easily stuffed a takedown and landed more body shots. Maldonado continued to pick apart an exhausted Villante with punching combinations. Villante landed a big right hand that had no effect on Maldonado, who fired back with a barrage of punches. Maldonado jabbed and prevented Villante from taking him down. He rocked Villante in the final 25 seconds and Villante collapsed forward in search of a desperation takedown as time expired. 10-8 Maldonado.

Winner: Fabio Maldonado by Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 21-6-0.

 

Michel “Trator” Prazeres vs Mairbek “Beckan” Taisumov

Round 1:
The fight began with an exchange of leg kicks and Prazeres landed two hard left hooks. He threw Taisumov down to the mat and moved to mount. Prazeres transitioned to a North-South choke attempt, but Taisumov scrambled back to his feet. He grabbed the cage, but Prazeres got him back down anyway and returned to mount position. Prazeres landed elbows and tried for an armbar. Taisumov was given a one point deduction for an illegal upkick shortly before the end of the round. 10-8 Prazeres.

Round 2:
Prazeres caught a kick and dropped Taisumov with a counter right hand in round two, but Taisumov recovered quickly and landed ground and pound from top position. The fight returned to the feet and both man landed power punches. Taisumov grabbed the cage again to avoid a Prazeres takedown and was docked another point. After the restart, Prazeres landed left and right hooks. Taisumov grazed his chin with a front kick and Prazeres answered with a head kick before the bell. 10-8 Prazeres.

Round 3:
Taisumov stuffed a takedown in round three, but Prazeres pinned him against the cage. Taisumov appeared to grab the fence once more and he was warned that he would be disqualified for one more infraction. Prazeres avoided Taisumov’s uppercuts and landed a lead left hook. He muscled Taisumov down to the ground and moved to mount. Taisumov scrambled back to his feet and took Prazeres’s back, but Prazeres broke free. The fighters traded punches to end the fight. 10-9 Prazeres.

Winner: Michel Prazeres by Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-25) after three rounds. He improves to 18-1-0.

 

Rony “Jason” Mariano Bezerra vs “Super” Steven Siler

Round 1:
Siler landed a series of leg kicks in the opening seconds and the fighters traded left hooks. Bezerra landed a big right hook and dropped Siler with a follow-up left. Siler appeared to recover from the second shot and he kicked at Bezerra from his back, but referee Wernei Cardoso intervened for what appeared to be a premature stoppage.

Winner: Rony Mariano Bezerra by TKO (Punches) at 1:17 of round one. He improves to 14-4-0.

 

Undercard Fights:

– Thiago “Marreta” Santos defeated Ronny Markes by TKO (Kick To The Body & Punches) at 0:53 of round one. He improves to 9-2-0 with the win.

– Jussier “Formiga” da Silva defeated Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:07 of round one. He improves to 16-3-0 with the win.

– Kenny Robertson defeated Thiago “Bodão” Perpétuo by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 1:45 of round one. He improves to 13-3-0 with the win.

– Hans Stringer defeated Francimar “Bodão” Barroso by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 22-5-3 with the win.

– Godofredo “Pepey” Castro defeated Noad “Neo” Lahat by KO (Flying Switch Knee) at 2:39 of round one. He improves to 10-3-0 with the win.
