The Ultimate Fighting Championship came to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia tonight for UFC Fight Night 33: “Hunt vs Bigfoot.” The event was headlined by a five-round heavyweight bout between Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Also tonight, former UFC light heavyweight champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua took on James Te Huna. Ryan “Darth” Bader battled Anthony “The Hippo” Perosh at 205 and Julie “Fireball” Kedzie faced Bethe “Pitbull” Correia in a bantamweight bout. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the main card.
Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt vs Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva
Round 1:
Hunt just missed with a big right hand early on and Silva landed a one-two. Silva dropped Hunt near the midway point of the round, but Hunt returned to his feet. Silva landed a knee and Hunt backed away. Both men landed right hands and Hunt reversed a clinch against the fence. Silva broke away and the round ended with another punching exchange. 10-9 Silva.
Round 2:
Silva chopped at Hunt’s lead leg with kicks in round two and clinched against the cage. Hunt broke away and Silva threw more kicks. Hunt landed a hard right hook that stunned Silva, but Silva regained his composure and he began to pick Hunt apart with kicks to the leg and body. Hunt switched stances and limped as Silva kicked away until the end of the round. 10-9 Silva.
Round 3:
Hunt took Silva down in the third round and Silva scrambled back to his feet against the cage. Silva broke free of the clinch and the fighters traded punches. Silva scored with more leg kicks, but Hunt floored him with a massive right hand. Hunt dove into Silva’s guard and battered him with more punches and elbows. He remained on top and landed ground and pound all the way until the end of the round. 10-9 Hunt. Could be a 10-8.
Round 4:
Both fighters landed power shots in the opening minute of round four and Hunt took Silva down against the cage. Silva got back to his feet and hurt Hunt with punches and knees. Hunt somehow stayed on his feet and he stunned Silva with uppercuts, but Silva recovered enough to reverse a takedown and he wound up on top in half-guard. Silva passed to full mount and dropped punches and elbows that cut Hunt on the forehead. Hunt held on and made it to the bell. 10-9 Silva, if not a 10-8.
Round 5:
Hunt staggered Silva with right hands again in the final round and Silva began to bleed from the nose. Hunt landed left hooks and shrugged off a takedown attempt as Silva slowed down. Hunt wobbled him with more left hands to the head and body. Time was called to check a cut on Silva’s forehead, but action soon resumed and the bloodied fighters traded punches. Silva landed a flurry and clinched for a takedown. Big left hands and two elbows landed for Hunt, but Silva countered with a knee. The bout ended with both men landing uppercuts. Amazing fight. 10-9 Hunt.
Result: Majority Draw (48-47 [Hunt], 47-47, 47-47) after five rounds. Hunt moves to 9-8-1, while Silva is now 18-5-1.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs James Te Huna
Round 1:
Rua stuffed an early takedown attempt and landed a flurry of punches, but Te Huna stood and landed a combination of his own. Te Huna walked forward and Rua floored him with a devastating left hook. The fight was immediately waved off as Te Huna was left unconscious on the mat.
Winner: Mauricio Rua by KO (Punch) at 1:03 of round one. He improves to 22-8-0.
Ryan “Darth” Bader vs Anthony “The Hippo” Perosh
Round 1:
Perosh looked to take the fight to the mat early on and Bader fought him off with knees and uppercuts. Perosh fell to his back and Bader landed more hard shots. Perosh stood and Bader rocked him with another uppercut. Perosh recovered and scored with a looping right hand. Bader avoided a takedown and knocked Perosh down, then cut him on the right cheek with elbow strikes.
Bader kept Perosh pinned down and he landed more elbows from the top. Perosh gave up his back and scrambled up to his feet. Bader took him down against the cage and wound up in Perosh’s guard. He stood up, then dove back in with punches. Bader cut Perosh again with elbow strikes just before the end of the one-sided round. 10-8 Bader.
Round 2:
Perosh pressed forward with punches in round two and Bader took him down once again. He kept the pressure on from the top by landing punches and elbows that forced Perosh to scramble. Bader prevented Perosh from rolling and standing up, and he dropped more elbows from half-guard. He remained on top until the bell. 10-8 Bader.
Round 3:
Perosh was aggressive with punches again in the final round, but Bader clipped him with a counter left hook and reversed a takedown. Just as he did in the first two rounds, Bader once again peppered Perosh with punches and pinned him on the mat. Perosh bled heavily from the face and Bader unloaded with more big punches. He briefly moved to mount, but Perosh managed to escape back to half-guard. Bader battered him with strikes all the way until the final bell. 10-8 Bader.
Winner: Ryan Bader by Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 16-4-0.
Soa “The Hulk” Palelei vs Pat “HD” Barry
Round 1:
Barry landed a jumping knee in the opening minute, but Palelei caught it and took him down. Barry worked for a kimura from the bottom and Palelei escaped by punching to the body. Palelei passed to mount and rained down heavy punches until Barry was rendered unconscious.
Winner: Soa Palelei by KO (Punches) at 2:09 of round one. He improves to 20-3-0.
Clint Hester vs Dylan “The Villain” Andrews
Round 1:
Hester landed a big right hook early in round one and he followed with more haymakers in the ensuing minute. Andrews clinched and took him down into half-guard. Hester defended well from the bottom, but Andrews snuck in short punches and looked to set up an arm-triangle choke. He switched to a guillotine choke and pulled half-guard, but Hester escaped. Andrews battled back to his feet and took Hester down again. He finished the round in side control. 10-9 Andrews.
Round 2:
Andrews opened the action with leg kicks in round two and he backed Hester up with a right hook. Hester countered with a right of his own and took Andrews down against the fence. He postured up with punches from half-guard and followed with elbows. The strikes opened a cut near Andrews’s left eye and Hester punished him with more shots as the fight returned to the feet. Hester scored with jabs and a leg kick late in the round. 10-9 Hester.
Between rounds, it was determined that Andrews had dislocated his right shoulder while throwing a punch in round two and the fight was stopped.
Winner: Clint Hester by TKO (Dislocated Shoulder) at 5:00 of round two. He improves to 9-3-0.
Bethe “Pitbull” Correia vs Julie “Fireball” Kedzie
Round 1:
Hard right hands were exchanged early on and Kedzie went high with kicks. The fighters traded left hooks and Kedzie threw another kick. Correia picked up the pace with leg kicks and Kedzie fired back with a left hand. She followed with a side kick and just missed with a spinning backfist. Correia clinched and the fighters exchanged short punches in close.
Kedzie circled out and Correia walked forward with a combination to the body and a huge left hook. She narrowly ducked under a spinning heel kick. Kedzie scored with a right hand and Correia clinched again. Kedzie countered with a knee and followed with a head kick attempt. Both women landed punches in the final 20 seconds and Correia dragged Kedzie to the mat. Very close round. 10-9 Kedzie.
Round 2:
Kedzie continued to mix up her strikes with kicks and punches in round two and Correia looked to counter with one-twos. A nice left hand landed for Kedzie and Correia replied with a body kick. Kedzie briefly knocked Correia down with a front kick to the body, but Correia stood and initiated a clinch against the cage. Kedzie defended and broke free.
A right hook connected for Correia, but Kedzie immediately answered back with knees and standing elbows. Correia backed away and Kedzie landed a spinning back kick to the liver. Left hooks were exchanged and Correia countered a front kick with a one-two. She shot in for a takedown and Kedzie stuffed it. Both women landed knees in the final seconds. 10-9 Kedzie.
Round 3:
Correia opened round three with a nice right hook and Kedzie’s left eye began to swell up. Correia kept the pressure on with combinations and Kedzie just missed with kicks. Correia landed kicks to the body and another flurry as she pressed forward. Kedzie threw a kick to the body, but Correia caught it and took her down. Kedzie used the cage to work back to her feet.
Correia held Kedzie down and briefly took her back, but Kedzie scrambled free and flurried with punches as she scrambled up. Back on the feet, Kedzie attempted a spinning hook kick that landed with the thigh. Hard punches were exchanged and Kedzie fought off a takedown attempt. Correia landed two left hooks late in the round and the fight ended with both women landing punches. 10-9 Correia.
Winner: Bethe Correia by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. She improves to 7-0-0.
Undercard Fights:
– Takeya Mizugaki defeated Nam Phan by Unanimous Decision (30-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 19-7-2 with the win.
– Caio “Hellboy” Magalhães defeated Nick “The Promise” Ring by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 7-1-0 with the win.
– Justin “Tank” Scoggins defeated Richie “Vas” Vaculik by TKO (Punches) at 4:43 of round one. He improves to 8-0-0 with the win.
– Krzysztof Jotko defeated Bruno “Carioca” Santos by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 14-0-0 with the win.
– Alex “The Dominican Nightmare” Garcia defeated Ben “Manimal” Wall by KO (Punches) at 0:43 of round one. He improves to 11-1-0 with the win.
