Team Quest shut out rivals Xtreme Couture in a gym versus gym rematch last night at Tuff-N-Uff: “Xtreme Couture vs Team Quest 2” in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Temecula, California-based Team Quest fighters went 3-0 against the hometown favourites in Tuff-N-Uff’s first amateur caged event.

The event also featured a trio of title fights, including the main event that saw highly-touted prospect Sean Bollinger submit Dustin Chevalier in round one for the Tuff-N-Uff Lightweight Championship. Jerry Shapiro and female champion Tsui-Jen Cunanan also walked away with Tuff-N-Uff title gold.

The brief but action-packed main event saw 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Riverside’s Sean Bollinger make short work of Striking Unlimited’s Dustin “Hair Trigger” Chevalier.

It was Chevalier who closed the distance and looked for a takedown early on, but Bollinger took his back and dragged him to the mat. Bollinger used punches to flatten Chevalier out against the cage and methodically worked for a rear-naked choke until he secured the choke at 1:38 of the opening round. Chevalier was forced to tap just as he lost consciousness, and Bollinger finally captured the Tuff-N-Uff Lightweight Championship that eluded him last year.

The Tuff-N-Uff Bantamweight Championship was also on the line when Jerry “J-Shap” Shapiro of Marc Laimon’s Cobra Kai battled West Coast MMA’s Jamie Hernandez over three 3:00 rounds.

Shapiro scored takedowns in the opening round, including a violent slam, but Hernandez defended and worked for guillotine chokes. The fighters alternated Kimura attempts later in the round, but neither one could secure a submission. Shapiro countered a takedown from Hernandez in round two with another Kimura and used it to sweep. He punched from side-control, then worked for a rear-naked choke, but Hernandez escaped and held back control himself before the round expired.

The third and final round began with a takedown from Hernandez, but Shapiro defended and eventually locked on an armbar two minutes into the round. Hernandez punched free and the fighters were stood up, prompting an exchange of punches before the bell. The judges’ returned a unanimous verdict in favour of Shapiro, who took home the title.

In the third and final title fight of the night, Phoenix Fight Club’s Tsui-Jen “Soo Bee Doo” Cunanan wasted little time in avenging her razor-thin Split Decision loss to Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts prospect Emily Peters-Kagan from last August.

Cunanan scored a quick takedown and transitioned to a high back control on the ground. She looked to be working for a rear-naked choke, but switched to an armbar and Peters-Kagan rolled to defend. She appeared to be free, but Cunanan adjusted and flatted Peters-Kagan out, forcing a verbal submission at the 1:13 mark of round one. Following the fight, Cunanan expressed her intentions to turn pro.

Despite giving up a size advantage to his opponent, Team Quest’s Juan Carlos “The Conqueror” Garcia choked out Xtreme Couture’s Jesse “The Karate Kid” Romero in the first round of their matchup.

Garcia scored a very brief takedown early on, but Romero got back to his feet and a battle for position followed against the cage. Garcia tried to pull guard with a guillotine choke, but Romero escaped and punched from the top. Garcia stood and pulled guard with another guillotine choke. This time, the hold was tight and Romero was forced to submit at 1:43 of the opening stanza.

Knockout of the Night unquestionably went to Team Quest’s Chris “The Crusher” Herrera, who brutally dispatched of Xtreme Couture’s Shane “King of Pain” Johnson.

The fighters circled tentatively early on and exchanged single jabs until Herrera rushed in with a devastating three-punch combination that was punctuated by a left hook. The punch sent Johnson crashing face-first to the mat and referee John Quinn waved off the fight at the 1:12 mark.

In the third gym versus gym matchup, Team Quest’s Craig “The Cannibal” Cook reigned supreme over Xtreme Couture’s James “Lanimal” Lanham after three 2:00 rounds.

Cook reversed a takedown in the opening round and struck from the top in mount until Lanham was able to push off of the cage and escape. Lanham landed a few punches from the top before the round came to a close. Cook stuffed another takedown in round two and tried to take Lanham’s back, but settled for punching from Lanham’s guard instead. Lanham managed to kick Cook off and stood, then caught a kick from Cook and dropped him with a right hand.

The final round saw Cook defend an early takedown, which led to an exchange of punches on the feet. Lanham took Cook down, but Cook quickly reversed and struck from the top in side-control until the bell. The judges were unanimous in siding with Cook, who took the hard-fought decision victory.

With the win, Team Quest defeated Xtreme Couture 3-0 in the rematch between the rival gyms.

Earlier in the evening, Rough House MMA’s Tori Adams submitted Gladiators Training Academy prospect Ashlee “The Terminator” Evans-Smith in the second round of their 145-pound women’s tournament semi-final bout.

Round one was very even, as the fighters battled for position against the cage for much of the duration. Evans-Smith appeared to hold a slight edge with her striking and cage control. The second round began with Evans-Smith catching a kick from Adams and tripping her to the mat. She punched from the top, but Adams tried for a triangle choke. Adams switched to an armbar and Evans-Smith nearly managed to escape, but could not and was forced to submit at 1:26 of round two.

With the victory, Adams advances on to face Taylor “No Mercy” Stratford in the finals of the Tuff-N-Uff 145-pound women’s tournament in March. The winner of that bout will be crowned the promotion’s first 145-pound women’s champion.

In a pair of all-out wars over three rounds, Team Quest’s Brandon “Young Money” Morris defeated Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu’s Milan Zerjal (who just fought one week earlier), while Team Vegas Bail’s Tyler Jeppesen outlasted Team Quest’s Jimmy Blakey in the night’s incredible opening bout.
