Baszler, Finney Advance In FCF Grand PrixThe second round of the Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s Bantamweight Grand Prix took place last night at FCF 40 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. In a pair of competitive three-round decisions, Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler and Jan “Cuddles” Finney were both victorious.

Baszler, already a veteran of both EliteXC and Strikeforce, will now move on to face Finney in the tournament finals at FCF 43 on June 12th. The winner of the June bout will receive a guaranteed contract with Strikeforce and could potentially challenge for a major title soon after.

Baszler (11-6-0) faced late replacement Alexis Davis in the main event of the evening. Davis, who took Jennifer Tate’s place in the tournament after Tate withdrew due to her second pregnancy, once again put on a game performance and showed exactly why she is one of the top prospects at 135 pounds. While some expected Baszler to cruise to another easy submission victory, she was forced to go the distance in a competitive bout with Davis. All ten of Baszler’s previous wins had come by submission.

Winner: Shayna Baszler by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three 5:00 rounds. She improves to 11-6-0 and advances to the finals of the FCF Women’s Bantamweight Grand Prix.

Finney (8-7-0) had all she could handle in a hotly-contested three-round war with Adrienna “AJ” Jenkins. Coming into the tournament, Jenkins had never fought past the first round of a fight and she dispatched of Sarah Schneider in round two at FCF 39. For the first time, Jenkins was forced to go the distance in her 20-fight career and came up on the wrong side of a close Split Decision. The win was easily one of Finney’s biggest to date, while Jenkins has nothing to be ashamed of and looked impressive in defeat.

Winner: Jan Finney by Split Decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29) after three 5:00 rounds. She improves to 8-7-0 and advances to the finals of the FCF Women’s Bantamweight Grand Prix.
