Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante vs Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox

Round 1:
Both fighters were aggressive with strikes early on and Wilcox attempted a jumping switch knee to the body. Wilcox mixed up his strikes with punches and kicks to the head and body. He caught a kick from Cavalcante and took him down, but Cavalcante quickly returned to his feet. Wilcox landed an overhand right and a combination.

Wilcox surprisingly continued to get the better of the striking exchanges and landed a front kick to the face. Cavalcante stuffed a takedown and landed a kick to the body. Wilcox answered with a grazing head kick and a one-two that backed Cavalcante up. A counter right cross scored for Wilcox and he fired off a flurry late in the round. 10-9 Wilcox.

Round 2:
Cavalcante landed a front kick to the body to open round two and time was called after Wilcox was badly poked in the eye. Wilcox explained to the cageside doctor that he could not see and the fight was stopped.

Result: No Decision (Accidental Eye Poke) at 0:31 of round two. Cavalcante moves to 15-4-1, 1 NC, 1 ND, while Wilcox is now 11-3-0, 1 ND.

 

Conor “Hurricane” Heun vs Magno Almeida

Round 1:
Heun jabbed early on, but Almeida countered with a right hook and a leg kick. Heun took him down and Almeida quickly spun into a kneebar attempt. He switched to a toe hold and Heun scrambled out. Heun wound up on the bottom and tried for an omoplata, but Almeida punched free. Heun trapped Almeida in rubber guard and landed slashing elbows.

Heun remained active from his back with punches and elbows as he prevented Almeida from moving. Almeida tried to posture up, but was unable to land anything besides weak hammerfists. Heun threw more elbows from the bottom and the fighters were stood up. The crowd rightfully booed the decision. Almeida landed kicks and a jumping knee to the body. 10-9 Heun.

Round 2:
The fighters traded kicks in the second round and Heun clinched. He pressed Almeida up against the cage and landed short knees and elbows, but was unable to take the fight to the mat. Almeida broke free and landed a left hook.

Almeida scored with a combination of punches and a knee, but Heun clinched up and took him down. Almeida secured an armbar from the bottom and torqued back on Huen’s arm, but Heun managed to spin enough to relieve pressure. He somehow held on and escaped. Close round. 10-9 Almeida.

Round 3:
Almeida landed a leg kick to open round two and the action briefly paused after Heun was poked in the eye. He fought on and landed a leg kick of his own. Almeida backed Heun up with a three-punch flurry and followed with a right cross. Heun answered with a right hand in return and took Almeida down. Almeida secured another armbar and Heun somehow escaped once again. Heun attempted to trap Almeida in rubber guard, but Almeida moved to side control.

He locked on an Anaconda Choke and Heun appeared to be in big trouble, but again he found a way out. From Almeida’s guard, Heun rained down double hammerfists and teed off with punches. Almeida tried for a triangle choke and Heun punched free. Almeida continued to hunt for submissions as Heun punched. He trapped Heun in a triangle at the bell. Great fight. 10-9 Almeida, barely. Could easily go to Heun due to the late rally.

Winner: Conor Heun by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 9-4-0.

 

Nah-Shon “The Rock N’ Roller” Burrell vs Joe Ray

Round 1:
Burrell opened the fight with a stiff jab and Ray answered with leg kicks. Ray landed a jab of his own, but Burrell slammed him down to the mat and worked from the top in half-guard. Ray regained full guard and tried for an armbar, but Burrell escaped and stood. He fought out of a triangle choke attempt and also a heel hook.

Burrell wound up on top in Ray’s half-guard again, but Ray locked on a Kimura. He transitioned to an armbar and Burrell escaped to side control. Ray locked on another armbar and Burrell narrowly scrambled out. Once again, Ray tried for an armbar, and the fighters stood up. Ray latched onto Burrell’s left arm for a Kimura and transitioned to an armbar. Burrell escaped before the bell. 10-9 Ray.

Round 2:
The second round began with an exchange of strikes and Ray just missed with a kick to the upper body. Burrell responded with kick-punch combos and took Ray down. Ray immediately worked for a Kimura and an armbar. Burrell moved to side control and momentarily landed punches and elbows, but Ray scrambled back to his feet.

Ray took Burrell down, but Burrell reversed and wound up in Ray’s half-guard. Referee Don Turnage stood the fighters up quickly and for no reason, but Burrell wasted little time in taking the fight back down to the mat. He stood over Ray and avoided upkicks, then settled into Ray’s guard. He spun into side control and prevented Ray from standing late in the round. 10-9 Burrell.

Round 3:
Burrell landed a flurry to the head and body to open round three and followed with a quick one-two soon after. He fired off another combination, but missed with a left hook to the body. Burrell continued to mix up his strikes with kicks and punches and he avoided a spinning back elbow. He countered a body kick with a solid right hand that opened a cut near Ray’s right eye.

Burrell took Ray down and landed short elbows from the top in half-guard. Ray stood, but Burrell took him back down. Ray locked on a guillotine choke, but Burrell pulled his head out and punched from the top. He tried to take Ray’s back, then tripped him to the mat after Ray briefly stood. Burrell landed punches and nearly moved to mount, but Ray kept him in half-guard. 10-9 Burrell.

Winner: Nah-Shon Burrell by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 6-1-0.

 

Isaac Vallie-Flagg vs Brian Melancon

Round 1:
Malancon opened the fight very aggressively with punches and backed Vallie-Flagg up with a combination. He took Vallie-Flagg down and moved to side control, then secured a top-side crucifix. Melancon landed punches, then scrambled and got to mount. More punches followed, but Vallie-Flagg got back to half-guard. He gave up his back while attempting to stand and Melancon looked for a rear-naked choke.

Vallie-Flagg defended the choke and managed to spin out, but wound up on the bottom against the cage. Vallie-Flagg stood and landed a knee and an elbow. Melancon countered with a left hook. He remained aggressive again with punches as Vallie-Flagg circled away. The fighters clinched soon after and exchanged knees to the body. Melancon countered a body kick with a solid right hand. 10-9 Melancon.

Round 2:
Vallie-Flagg landed jabs early in round two and Melancon replied with a jumping knee attempt that missed. He clinched, but it was Vallie-Flagg who scored a takedown. Melancon got back to his feet and both fighters landed glancing standing elbow strikes. Vallie-Flagg kept Melancon pressed up against the cage and landed two knees before the fighters were separated.

Melancon tried for a takedown, but Vallie-Flagg stayed on his feet. After an exchange of knees, the fighters were separated once again and Melancon scored with a hard uppercut. Vallie-Flagg backed up, but quickly recovered and clinched. He landed a knee to the body and a standing elbow in the final seconds of the close round. 10-9 Vallie-Flagg, barely.

Round 3:
Melancon clinched and backed Vallie-Flagg up to the cage in round three, but Vallie-Flagg countered with knees to the body and circled out after landing a body kick. Melancon answered with a left hook to the body and the fighters battled for position in another clinch. Melancon threw Vallie-Flagg to the mat and landed in side control.

Melancon first tried for a rear-naked choke, then moved to mount, but Vallie-Flagg scrambled and got back to full guard. The fight returned to the feet and Vallie Flagg clinched. Melancon reversed and threw short punches to the head and body. The referee separated the fighters, but they promptly clinched again. Vallie-Flagg landed knees, but again the referee intervened. Melancon scored a takedown late in the round. 10-9 Melancon.

Winner: Isaac Vallie-Flagg by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 12-3-1.

 

Undercard Fight:

Todd “Maniac” Moore defeated Mike “The Greek” Bronzoulis by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 12-4-0.

  1. very disappointing performances by the heavyweights , they were hyping this tournament as the best heavyweights. well i think mir , carwin, schuab , dos santos , lesnar, velasquez have absolutely nothing to worry about . they are definately in a class above the fighters we saw last night
