Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann vs Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann

Round 1:
Volkmann connected with a nice overhand left early on and continued to be the aggressor on the feet. Punches were exchanged in close and Volkmann tried to clinch, but Kampmann broke free. A one-two backed Kampmann up, but he floored Volkmann with a counter right. Volkmann quickly recovered and stood up. He pushed forward with more punches, but Kampmann began to score with effective counters. A big flurry rocked Kampmann, but once again, he dropped Volkmann with a counter right hook.

Kampmann worked from Volkmann’s guard and landed elbows, but Volkmann did well to prevent Kampmann from landing anything damaging. Kampmann stood up, then dove back into Volkmann’s half-guard with a punch. He stood again, then blasted Volkmann with hard punches on the ground. Just as Volkmann looked to stand, Kampmann trapped him in a power guillotine choke and Volkmann quickly tapped out. Great fight.

Winner: Martin Kampmann by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 4:03 of round one. He improves to 16-3-0.

 

Cole “Magrinho” Miller vs Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon

Round 1:
Miller pushed forward with a big flurry early on and clinched briefly, then scored with two body kicks and tried to pull guard. Lauzon remained on his feet and dropped Miller with a huge left hook. Miller survived and got up, but Lauzon kept the pressure on with two more hooks and a knee. Miller secured a Thai clinch and landed knees and uppercuts. Lauzon caught a kick and punished Miller with punches. He took Miller’s back in a scramble and dragged him to the mat.

Lauzon tried to transition into a Kimura, but lost the position. Miller rolled into an armbar and then moved straight to an inverted triangle choke on the ground. He added a Kimura in as well. Lauzon could not escape and was forced to submit. Extremely impressive submission for Miller in an excellent fight.

Winner: Cole Miller by Submission (Inverted Triangle & Kimura) at 3:05 of round one. He improves to 16-4-0.

 

Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz vs Ryan Jensen

Round 1:
Munoz opened the fight with a one-two and avoided a kick. Quick strikes were exchanged and Jensen landed a jumping knee. Jensen secured a front head lock and dragged Munoz to the mat, but Munoz passed to side-control. Jensen managed to work back to his feet and scored with a combination. The fighters clinched against the cage and Munoz took Jensen down.

Jensen looked for a triangle choke from the bottom, but Munoz punished him with hammerfists. Jensen rolled over and Munoz absolutely teed off with huge punches to the sides of Jensen’s head. Jensen looked to tap out right away, then did so seconds later. Impressive victory for Munoz.

Winner: Mark Munoz by Submission (Punches) at 2:30 of round one. He improves to 7-1-0.

 

Jake Ellenberger vs Mike “Quicksand” Pyle

Round 1:
Ellenberger backed Pyle up with a punching flurry and took him down seconds later. Pyle looked to set up a submission from his back, but Ellenberger stayed calm and landed a handful of short elbows. Pyle continued to tie Ellenberger up and both landed elbow strikes.

The fight returned to the feet and Ellenberger landed a one-two as Pyle threw a knee. Ellenberger scored a takedown, but Pyle locked on a Kimura. Ellenberger kept his arm out of danger and Pyle relinquished the hold. Ellenberger landed some vicious hammerfists and punches in the final five seconds and Pyle got up slowly while favouring his ribs. 10-9 Ellenberger.

Round 2:
Pyle tried to clinch for a takedown early in the second round, but was dropped by a big right hand from Ellenberger. More punches followed on the ground as Pyle turtled and referee Yves Lavigne stopped the fight. Huge win for Ellenberger.

Winner: Jake Ellenberger by TKO (Punches) at 0:22 of round two. He improves to 22-5-0.

 

Rafaello “Tractor” Oliveira vs John “Quick Guns” Gunderson

Round 1:
Oliveira opened the fight with a stiff leg kick and was drilled by a counterpunch for his efforts. Gunderson secured a front head lock and dragged Oliveira to the ground with a guillotine choke. Oliveira could not break free of the hold, but managed to stand him. He tried to powerbomb Gunderson, but Gunderson released the hold briefly and stood up.

Gunderson locked on another guillotine choke and pulled half-guard. Oliveira scrambled and moved to mount, then struck from the top. Gunderson gave up his back and Oliveira looked for a choke. Gunderson rolled over again and Oliveira attemped an arm-triangle choke. Gunderson continued to roll to try to escape and he finally made it to his feet just before the bell. 10-9 Oliveira.

Round 2:
Oliveira began the second round with more kicks and ate another right hand counter. Oliveira scored a takedown, but Gunderson used a Kimura to sweep and impressively worked back to his feet. Oliveira quickly scored another takedown and moved to mount soon after. Gunderson gave up his back, but defended rear naked choke attempts from Oliveira. Gunderson rolled over, but could not scramble to his feet.

Oliveira took Gunderson’s back again and landed punches as Gunderson turtled. Oliveira looked to set up a modified armbar, but Gunderson defended and evaded danger. Late in the round, Gunderson managed to get Oliveira off of his back and took top position, then landed punches in the final seconds. 10-9 Oliveira.

Round 3:
Oliveira took Gunderson down quickly in the final round, but Gunderson got back to his feet. He scored a takedown of his own and looked to work from the top, but Oliveira swept him. Gunderson got back to his feet, only to be taken down again.

Gunderson attempted a weak guillotine choke, but Oliveira easily escaped and moved to mount. After a few weak punches, Oliveira took Gunderson’s back and tried for a rear naked choke. Gunderson defended and survived a late-fight armbar from Oliveira. 10-9 Oliveira.

Winner: Rafaello Oliveira by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 10-2-0.

 

While injuries resulted in many changes to the card, UFC 108 was an entertaining and exciting night of fights, and a number of future contenders and title challengers picked up big victories.
