Casey “The Underdog” Olson vs Chris “The Urban Legend” Culley
Round 1:
The fighters circled each other in the opening minute and Olson missed with a wild Superman Punch. He continued to stalk Culley around the cage, but missed another punch and failed in a takedown attempt. Olson clinched and tried for a takedown against the cage. He picked Culley up and violently slammed him to the mat in the corner. Olson moved straight to mount and teed off with punches until the referee stopped the fight. Big win for Olson, who gets back on the winning track.
Winner: Casey Olson by TKO (Punches) at 2:32 of round one. He improves to 11-3-0.
Cole “The Apache Kid” Escovedo vs Maurice Eazel
Round 1:
Escovedo landed a nice head kick, but fell. Eazel allowed him to stand and was dropped briefly by a front kick. Eazel clinched and Escovedo attempted a flying triangle choke. Eazel had none of it and Escovedo went flying. Back on the feet, Escovedo landed a liver kick and followed with kicks to the legs. He floored Eazel with a big head kick and finished the fight with punches on the ground. Very impressive win for Escovedo.
Winner: Cole Escovedo by TKO (Head Kick & Punches) at 1:47 of round one. He improves to 14-4-0.
Rico Altamirano vs Alex “Spider” Trevino
Round 1:
Altamirano scored a big takedown in round one and landed punches from the top. He kept Trevino down and racked up points with punches and hammerfists from the top. Trevino managed to work his way back up, but Altamirano landed two kicks and scored another takedown. More punches followed and Altamirano punished Trevino until late in the round when Trevino stood up and scored with a one-two. 10-9 Altamirano.
Round 2:
The second round began with a big exchange and both fighters landed kicks. Altamirano slammed Trevino down and punched from the top. Time was called after an illegal upkick from Trevino and Altamirano knocked him down with a combination. He stood over Trevino, but was unable to do any damage and the fight returned to the feet. Both fighters landed big punches in an exchange. Altamirano rushed in with a beautiful flying knee against the cage. Trevino clinched and tried for a takedown, but Altamirano wound up on top. Trevino locked on a triangle choke just before the bell. 10-9 Altamirano.
Round 3:
The final round began slowly as each fighter looked to time their shots. Altamirano scored a takedown, but little transpired and the fighters were stood up. Both landed decent strikes in an exchange and alternated single punches and kicks. Trevino scored with a head kick that got Altamirano’s attention and Altamirano answered with a takedown. From the top, Altamirano punched until Trevino scrambled to his feet. The fighters traded punches and leg kicks until the final bell. 10-9 Altamirano.
Winner: Rico Altamirano by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 3-2-0.
While overshadowed by tomorrow night’s “Fedor vs Rogers” card, Strikeforce Challengers 4 was still a solid event and saw Billy Evangelista take one big step closer to a title shot.
