Ben “Killa B” Saunders vs “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis
Round 1:
Saunders walked forward with a high kick, but Davis ducked under. Saunders secured a Thai clinch and tried for knees, but Davis pressed him against the cage. Davis backed away and landed a quick flurry, but Saunders landed a trio of knees in another Thai clinch. Predictably, Davis was cut by the strikes and Saunders scored with two more big knees. He landed more to the body and backed Davis up with knees to the face.
Davis answered with a one two and Saunders scored with a body kick, then tried for a takedown. Saunders was relentless with the Thai clinch and battered Davis with more knees. Davis circled free and ate a pair of jabs from Saunders. In another Thai clinch, Saunders landed two huge knees that knocked Davis out cold. Huge win for Saunders.
Winner: Ben Saunders by KO (Knees) at 3:24 of round one. He improves to 8-1-2.
Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove vs Jake Rosholt
Round 1:
After an exchange of jabs, Rosholt shot in and scored a slam takedown. He quickly took Grove’s back, but Grove stood up. Rosholt slammed Grove to the mat again, but could not keep him down. Grove pressed Rosholt against the cage and landed knees to the body, then scored a takedown of his own. He landed elbows and short punches to the ribs.
Rosholt worked back to his feet and rocked Grove with a left hook. He backed Grove up with more punches and managed to drag Grove to the ground. Rosholt passed to mount and then took Grove’s back, but Grove regained half-guard and fought off an arm-triangle choke. Within seconds, Grove went from an armbar to an extremely quick triangle choke and Rosholt immediately tapped out.
Winner: Kendall Grove by Submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:59 of round one. He improves to 11-6-0, 1 NC.
Brian Foster vs Brock Larson
Round 1:
The fighters circled early on and Larson looked to clinch, but Foster fought him off. Larson dove for a takedown and managed to get Foster to the ground. Foster worked back to his feet and tripped Larson to the mat. He briefly held mount, but stood up and landed hard punches from a standing position.
Two more huge punches landed for Foster, but Larson trapped him in half-guard. Foster moved to mount again and landed punches from the top. Larson pushed Foster off and Foster fell to his knees. Larson then illegally upkicked him in the face and time was called while Foster recovered. Larson was deducted one point and the fight resumed.
Larson rushed in with a one-two, but Foster ducked under and reversed a takedown. He fought off a guillotine choke and Larson landed two knees while Foster had one hand on the mat. He was docked another point for the illegal knees. 10-7 Foster.
Round 2:
The fighters traded punches early in round two and Foster connected with a solid left hook. A counter right scored for Foster as well and he added another one seconds later. Foster landed a spinning back kick and two punches that rocked Larson. He slammed Larson to the ground and rained down big hammerfists.
Larson regained guard and Foster stood up. Larson shot in for a takedown and Foster stuffed it, then blasted Larson with three quick punches as Larson tapped out. Very, very impressive win for Foster.
Winner: Brian Foster by Submission (Punches) at 3:25 of round two. He improves to 13-4-0.
Caol “Uno Shoten” Uno vs Fabricio “Morango” Camoes
Round 1:
Camoes scored with a head kick early on that forced Uno to backpedal. He took Uno down and moved to North-South position, but Uno scrambled back to his feet. Camoes landed a combination and scored another takedown. He stood up and threw a diving punch, but Uno evaded and stood up again.
Another takedown followed for Camoes and he took Uno’s back. Camoes secured a tight rear naked choke, but Uno showed his resilience and somehow escaped. Uno spun out and took top position, then landed punches from Camoes’s guard. He kept Camoes down until the bell. 10-9 Camoes.
Round 2:
Camoes opened round two with a pair of looping hooks and scored a takedown. Uno worked back to his feet and avoided another takedown, then tripped Camoes to the mat himself. Uno landed a handful of strikes from the top and Camoes illegally upkicked him in the face. Time was called and Camoes was deducted one point.
Uno was fine and the fight quickly resumed with him working from Camoes’s guard. Camoes worked back to his feet and scored with a series of punches. He landed a trio of hard left hooks and shot in for a takedown. Uno reversed and worked from the top, but Camoes stood up and landed a combination and a standing elbow in the final seconds. Very close round. 9-9 due to the point deduction.
Round 3:
Camoes found more success with left hooks in the final round and he followed with a pair of right crosses. Uno clinched and tried for a takedown, but Camoes defended. Uno slipped while throwing a kick and Camoes managed to land a decent punch before Uno returned to his feet. Left hooks continued to find the mark for Camoes and he controlled the striking exchanges.
Uno scored a big takedown and worked from Camoes’s guard. He elbowed from the top and Camoes tried to counter with hammerfists from his back. Uno passed to side-control and landed short strikes, then moved to North-South position. Camoes escaped to his knees, but Uno used a front head lock to keep him in place. Another close round. 10-9 Uno.
Result: Majority Draw (29-27 [Uno], 28-28, 28-28) after three rounds. Uno is now 25-12-5, while Camoes moves to 10-4-1.
George Sotiropoulos vs Jason “Dynamite” Dent
Round 1:
Both fighters landed combinations early on and Sotiropoulos targeted the body. He followed with a head kick and more punches were exchanged. Dent landed some hard hooks over the top as Sotiropoulos clinched, but Sotiropoulos was unfazed. The fighters continued to trade strikes, but Dent began to get the better of the exchanges.
Midway through the round, Sotiropoulos shot in and scored a takedown. Dent elbowed from the bottom, but Sotiropoulos quickly passed to half-guard and worked for a Kimura. Dent briefly regained guard, but Sotiropoulos moved right to side-control. He tried to move to mount and eventually got there, then teed off with punches and elbows. 10-9 Sotiropoulos.
Round 2:
Sotiropoulos opened round two with kicks and a trio of quick one-twos. Dent connected with a hard right hook and both landed jabs. Sotiropoulos landed a nice uppercut and caught a kick from Dent, then tripped him to the mat. From half-guard, Sotiropoulos worked for a Kimura, but Dent scrambled out. Sotiropoulos took Dent’s back and Dent rolled to escape.
From North-South position, Sotiropoulos landed elbows and he moved back to side-control. Dent battled to his feet, but Sotiropoulos took his back again. He dragged Dent back down and moved to mount. Sotiropoulos scored with short punches and elbows from the top and rolled into an armbar. Dent held on, but Sotiropoulos used his legs to secure an arm crush, then broke Dent’s grip and extended Dent’s arm for the tapout.
Winner: George Sotiropoulos by Submission (Armbar) at 4:36 of round two. He improves to 11-2-0.
While the event was rather poor on paper, UFC 106 turned out fairly well in the end, but it appears that the overabundance of fight cards has lowered the overall quality that past UFC events enjoyed.
