MFC 22: “Payoff” Results

Mike Nickels vs David Heath

Round 1:
Nickels landed a right hook and a leg kick early on, but Heath immediately countered with a one-two. Leg kicks landed for Nickels and Heath answered with jabs that caused Nickels’s eye to swell. Nickels secured a Thai clinch and landed two knees and an elbow over the top. Heath threw a wild six-punch combination and the fighters began to trade heavy punches. Heath landed a one-two that seemed to anger Nickels and Nickels rushed forward with punches and a knee. Heath cut Nickels above the left eye with a counterpunch and followed with combinations. He landed knees in a clinch and both fighters threw haymakers at the bell. 10-9 Heath.

Round 2:
Nickels rocked Heath with a right hook to start the second round and swarmed him with punches in the corner. Knees and elbows landed for Nickels in a clinch, but Heath regained his composure and swung back with looping hooks. More knees landed to the head of Heath and Nickels punished him with punches, but Heath countered with another flurry. Time was called to replace Heath’s mouthpiece, but the frenetic action resumed and Nickels continued to dominate the exchanges. Big punches landed for both fighters and Heath scored with uppercuts in close.

Nickels used jabs to keep Heath at bay and Heath began to bleed from beside the left eye, in addition to on the temple from earlier elbow strikes. Nickels landed a lunging hook and the fighters traded knees and punches in a clinch. Heath’s mouthpiece came out again and he was warned, but the fight continued. Heath landed a right hook and a stiff jab and more hard punches were exchanged. Nickels clinched and landed knees. Amazing round. 10-9 Nickels.

Round 3:
The final round began with a quick one-two from Nickels and he knocked Heath’s mouthpiece out once again. Heath was deducted one point and the fighters returned to trading hard punches. A big right cross landed for Nickels and he strung together a series of quick combinations. More punches were exchanged and Nickels rocked Heath with a right hook. He followed with another one and Heath dropped his hands. Heath stood still and allowed Nickels to tee off with big punches, then countered with a left hook. The fighters traded punches and Nickels threw Heath to the mat in the corner. He quickly took Heath’s back and secured a rear naked choke that ended the incredible fight.

Winner: Mike Nickels by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 4:02 of round three. He improves to 8-2-0.

 

 

Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo vs Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman

Round 1:
Jimmo circled around the ring and threw occasional kicks to keep Eastman at bay as Eastman looked to find his range. A right hook landed for Eastman and Jimmo missed with a one-two. Eastman clinched and the fighters traded strikes. Both fighters landed knees to the body until the referee separated them. Eastman clinched again and more short strikes were exchanged before the uneventful round came to an end. 10-9 Jimmo.

Round 2:
Eastman quickly clinched in the second round and looked for a takedown, but Jimmo stayed on his feet and both fighters landed knees. Jimmo muscled Eastman into the corner, but Eastman reversed a takedown and wound up in side-control. Eastman isolated Jimmo’s arm and landed short elbows that cut Jimmo beside the left eye. Jimmo regained guard and Eastman threw a handful of weak punches and hammerfists. The referee stood the fighters up and Jimmo landed a head kick just before the bell. 10-9 Eastman.

Round 3:
Leg kicks were exchanged in the final round and Eastman clinched against the ropes. Both fighters landed knees until the referee separated them. Eastman countered a right hook by throwing Jimmo to the mat. He landed sparse strikes and the fight was moved to the centre of the ring. Eastman moved to half-guard and punched the ribs of Jimmo, but the fight was stood up. Eastman clinched and landed knees. 10-9 Eastman.

Two judges gave the first two rounds to Jimmo, who took a controversial Split Decision win, but neither fighter really made any effort to take control of the fight.

Winner: Ryan Jimmo by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 11-1-0.

 

 

Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt vs Nathan “The Gunner” Gunn

Round 1:
Gunn caught an early kick from Spratt and countered with a right cross that sent Spratt to the ground. Gunn took Spratt’s back, but Spratt spun free. A scramble followed and Gunn took Spratt’s back again. Spratt stood up with Gunn on his back, in the same position that Spratt has lost so many fights before by rear naked choke, but Spratt got free. Gunn took him down again, but Spratt got to his feet and landed a one-two.

Gunn caught another kick and threw Spratt to the mat, then took his back again. He landed a knee to the body and Spratt stood up. Spratt attempted a standing Kimura, but was met with another slam takedown for his efforts. Spratt did a good job of preventing Gunn from doing any damage and even looked for submissions from his back. Gunn took Spratt’s back, but could not secure a choke. 10-9 Gunn.

Round 2:
Gunn rushed forward with a wild flurry to begin the second round, but Spratt rocked him badly with a lead right hook from the southpaw stance. He followed with more punches and knees as a dazed Gunn tried to hold on. After eating more big punches, a bloodied Gunn managed to clinch in the corner. Gunn scored a takedown and eventually tried to pass to mount. Spratt scrambled to his feet and landed a right hook, then just missed with a huge uppercut.

Gunn took Spratt down and jumped on his back, but Spratt defended and stood up. Spratt fell out of the ring while Gunn tried for another takedown and time was called to allow him to get back inside. Spratt landed two lead right hooks and a knee, then a one-two. He followed with an uppercut that knocked Gunn out cold. Spratt, knowing that the fight was over, walked away before Gunn even hit the canvas. Excellent comeback win for Spratt, while Gunn suffers his first loss.

Winner: Pete Spratt by KO (Punch) at 4:19 of round two. He improves to 20-15-0.

 

 

Undercard Fights:

Dwayne Lewis defeated Jared “J-Rod” Kilkenny by TKO (Punches) at 3:31 of round one. He improves to 9-4-0 with the win.

Jason Heit defeated Paapa Inkumusah by TKO (Punches) at 4:59 of round two. He improves to 3-0-0 with the win.

Joe Christopher defeated Andrew Buckland by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 1:54 of round one. He improves to 8-2-0 with the win.

Nick Hryunchyshyn defeated Jesse MacDougall by TKO (Punches) at 4:29 of round two. He improves to 2-0-0 with the win.
