Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that rising star Angela Magana has signed with the promotion and will participate in the upcoming Bellator 115-pound women’s tournament. Magana is the fifth announced signing, joining Megumi Fujii, Rosi Sexton, Lisa Ward and Jessica Pene.
Magana has won five of her last seven fights since a controversial loss to Jessica “Jag” Aguilar in March of 2008. She advanced to the finals of the 2009 HOOKnSHOOT/GFight Women’s Grand Prix before dropping a Unanimous Decision to England’s Lisa Higo.

Former boxing and MMA world champion Elena “Babydoll” Reid has been sidelined with multiple knee injuries and has withdrawn from the upcoming Bellator 115-pound women’s tournament. Reid confirmed details of the injuries exclusively with MMARising.com today and the talented striker will be sidelined for at least eight months.
Reid suffered a torn MCL and ruptured ACL in the weeks leading up to her April SNMMA title defence, but opted to fight on and was ultimately defeated by last-minute replacement opponent Catia “Cat Woman” Vitoria.

It took just over two minutes for “The Queen of Spades,” Shayna Baszler, to dispatch of fellow veteran Adrienna “AJ” Jenkins in the finals of the FCF Women’s Bantamweight Grand Prix last night. The final bout took place at FCF 43 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with Baszler capturing the grand prix title with a first-round armbar.
The tournament underwent a number of changes throughout its five-month run, but in the end, Baszler emerged victorious and will now return to Strikeforce in hopes of getting a shot at the 135-pound women’s title.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship came to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada tonight with UFC 115: “Liddell vs Franklin” at General Motors Place. The event was headlined by a light heavyweight bout between former UFC champions Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and Rich “Ace” Franklin.
Also on the card, hard-hitting kickboxers Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović and Pat “HD” Barry squared off in an excellent heavyweight bout, while Paulo Thiago faced Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann in a battle of welterweight contenders. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the debut B.C. card.

Dutch standout and former 145-pound title challenger Marloes “Rumina” Coenen will be invited to take part in the upcoming Strikeforce women’s tournament at 135 pounds. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz confirmed the news with MMARising.com today and an official tournament announcement will follow in the next two weeks.
A report earlier this month had stated that Coenen would challenge Sarah Kaufman for the Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight (135-Pound) Championship in July, but that honour went to Roxanne Modafferi.

The world’s top female fighter, Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii, upped her perfect professional record to 20-0 tonight at Bellator Fighting Championships 21 in Hollywood, Florida. Fujii picked up her first career TKO victory when she stopped Sarah “White Tiger” Schneider in the third round.
Schneider displayed an impressive guard and nullified much of Fujii’s offence on the ground, but Fujii bloodied Schneider late in the opening round and controlled the fight from start to finish. She will return to Bellator in the promotion’s 115-pound women’s tournament later this year.

The Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight (135-Pound) Championship will be on the line when undefeated Canadian Sarah Kaufman defends against Roxanne Modafferi at Strikeforce Challengers 9. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz confirmed the July 23rd bout with MMARising.com earlier today.
Kaufman captured the title in a five-round February bout with Takayo Hashi at Strikeforce Challengers 6, while Modafferi earned her shot at the gold by upsetting Tara LaRosa at Moosin: “Sylvia vs Pudzianowski” on May 21st.

As first reported earlier this month, top-five flyweight Lisa Ward will make her Bellator Fighting Championships debut on June 17th when she faces fellow Bellator newcomer Stephanie “Macaquinha” Frausto. The promotion officially confirmed the Bellator 22 bout with MMARising.com today.
Frausto gives up a considerable amount of experience to the world-travelled Ward, who will be part of the Bellator 115-pound women’s tournament later this year. However, Frausto has fought three times this year, while Ward will be competing for the first time since a June 2009 loss to Miku Matsumoto.
