Highly-touted atomweight prospect Ga Yeon Song kicked off her mixed martial arts career with a dominant first-round TKO victory on Sunday night at Road Fighting Championship 17 in Seoul, South Korea. Song stopped fellow pro debutant Emi Yamamoto in the card’s 105-pound main event.
Song, who has appeared on South Korean television shows and formerly served as a Road FC ring girl, received a massive ovation from the crowd in attendance. The 19-year-old overwhelmed Yamamoto with her ground and pound and she now appears poised to become Road FC’s next big star.
Song (1-0-0) swarmed on Yamamoto (0-1-0) with punches right away and she backed the Japanese fighter up with a hard right hand. Song threw Yamamoto to the mat and looked to pass from side control to mount, but Yamamoto scrambled back to her feet. The fighters battled in the clinch and Song scored with another combination that set up a trip takedown. This time, Song was able to get to mount and she began raining down punches from the top. Yamamoto blocked some of the strikes, and tried to buck to escape, but Song continued to drop punches for more than 30 seconds until the fight was stopped.
While much of the promotion done by Road FC leading up to Sunday focused on Song’s appearance, including the famous “most beautiful MMA fighter in the world” tagline, Song accomplished her goal of proving to the viewing audience that she has the skills required to become a legitimate contender in the women’s atomweight division. Sunday’s win earned Song even more fans among the Road FC audience and she will likely play a key part in Road FC’s schedule in the coming months.
