UFC Live 4: "Barry vs Kongo" Live Play-By-Play & ResultsDespite a last-minute change to tonight’s main event, the Ultimate Fighting Championship made its way to the Consol Energy Centre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for UFC Live 4. The card was headlined by a heavyweight bout between talented strikers Pat “HD” Barry and Cheick Kongo.

In the co-main event, Rick “The Horror” Story faced Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman, who took the fight on one day’s notice after Nate Marquardt was removed from the card and subsequently released from the UFC. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for all of the tonight’s UFC fights.

 

Cheick Kongo vs Pat “HD” Barry

Round 1:
Barry landed a hard leg kick early on and surprisingly looked to clinch for a takedown. Kongo backed away and landed a leg kick of his own. More leg kicks were exchanged and Kongo followed with a one-two. He began to bounce around on his feet and flashed out a head kick that was blocked. Barry floored Kongo with a huge right hook and Kongo appeared to be out cold. He got to his knees and was hurt very badly with more punches.

Barry continued to punish Kongo with heavy shots and Kongo once again looked to be totally out. He somehow recovered and got back to his feet, then backed up to the cage. Kongo then took advantage of the fight not being stopped seconds earlier, as he stunned Barry with a right hook counter and melted him with an uppercut for the finish. Barry was out cold for real, and the fight was stopped. Incredible comeback.

Winner: Cheick Kongo by KO (Punch) at 2:39 of round one. He improves to 16-6-2.

 

Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman vs Rick “The Horror” Story

Round 1:
Brenneman clinched right away, but Story threw him to the mat and nearly moved to mount. Brenneman scrambled to his feet and broke free of a clinch. Story landed a knee to the body and Brenneman backed him up to the cage. Story reversed and tripped Brenneman to the mat, then landed a knee as Brenneman stood. Brenneman landed a right hook and backed away, then took Story down and secured back control.

Story stood and spun out. Brenneman took him down and moved to side control. Story got back to half-guard and then to full guard as Brenneman threw punches to the body. The fighters traded short punches on the ground and Brenneman continued to target Story’s ribs. More punches scored for Brenneman and Story tried to posture for a triangle choke or an armbar. 10-9 Brenneman.

Round 2:
Brenneman wasted no time in taking Story back down in round two. Story tried for a Brabo Choke, but Brenneman spun out and moved to North-South position, then stood up. The fighters traded punches and Story connected with a pair of left crosses and a knee. Brenneman took him back down and Story looked for a leg submission. He let it go and regained full guard.

Story trapped Brenneman in rubber guard momentarily, but let it go and Brenneman punched to the body. Story attempted a guillotine choke, but Brenneman passed to side control in the process. Story maintained the choke and got back to half-guard, but Brenneman eventually freed himself. He moved back to side control before the bell. 10-9 Brenneman.

Round 3:
Brenneman took Story down in the final round, but Story countered with a Kimura attempt. He tried to switch to an armbar and took a high back control in the process. Referee Mark Matheny stood the fighters up in a horrendous call and Brenneman shot in for another takedown. Story secured a reverse triangle choke on the ground and Brenneman was unable to escape.

Brenneman eventually managed to free himself, but wound up on the bottom and Story landed a knee to the body. Story landed punches with his left hand and moved to mount. Story used his shoulder to smash Brenneman’s head off of the mat repeatedly, then postured up, but Brenneman scrambled and took over top position. Story attempted a Kimura, but lost it before the bell. 10-9 Story.

Winner: Charlie Brenneman by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 14-2-0.

 

Matt “The Immortal” Brown vs John “Doomsday” Howard

Round 1:
Howard opened the fight with three hard leg kicks, then followed with another one soon after. Brown clinched and landed a knee to the body, then threw a head kick as Howard circled away. Howard landed another leg kick and Brown answered with a left hook to the body. Howard caught a kick and took Brown down, but wound up on the bottom and returned to his feet. Another hard leg kick landed for Howard. And another. He continued to land kicks at will, but Brown staggered him briefly with a one-two and a head kick.

Howard quickly recovered and took Brown down against the cage. Brown got back up and landed a series of knees and a head kick. He tripped Howard to the mat and punched from the top, then secured a Brabo Choke. Howard escaped to his feet and violently slammed Brown down. From the top in side control, Howard threw short punches, then took Brown’s back as the fighters stood. Howard scored one more takedown and the round ended with an exchange of kicks and punches. Close round. 10-9 Howard.

Round 2:
Howard backed Brown up to the cage with punches in round two and clinched, but Brown circled out. Howard landed a leg kick and the fighters clinched again. Howard latched onto Brown’s leg and tried to take him down. Brown countered with a guillotine choke and stayed on his feet. He returned to the centre of the cage and tripped Howard to the mat.

From the top in Howard’s half-guard, Brown landed short strikes and tried to pass to the side. Howard used a Kimura to sweep, but it was a heel hook attempt that got Brown to his back. Howard entered Brown’s guard and immediately had to fight off a triangle choke. Brown switched to an omoplata late in the round. 10-9 Brown.

Round 3:
Howard returned to leg kicks in the final round and Brown answered with one of his own. Brown scored a takedown against the cage, but Howard stood and looked for a guillotine choke. He took Brown’s back as Brown got to his feet and tried to drag him back down. Brown stayed up, but Howard remained on his back and attempted a single-leg takedown.

Howard picked Brown up and tried to slam him down, but Brown balanced on one leg. The fighters separated and Brown landed two knees. Brown jabbed and Howard pulled him down to the mat. Brown stood and Howard dragged him down a second time. Howard looked to strike from the top and Brown countered with a Kimura attempt. Howard moved to half-guard and nearly secured a Kimura of his own. 10-9 Howard, barely.

Winner: Matt Brown by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 14-10-0.

 

Matt Mitrione vs Christian Morecraft

Round 1:
Both fighters landed short punches and kicks early on. Mitrione targeted Morecraft’s lead leg and Morecraft answered with a body kick. More kicks landed for Mitrione and he dropped Morecraft with a straight left. Morecraft stood and the fighters traded punches. Mitrione stayed out of range of Morecraft’s punches and landed crisp strikes in return. A right hand connected for Morecraft, but Mitrione immediately answered with a leg kick and a left cross.

Morecraft began to find success with leg kicks of his own, and both he and Mitrione landed right hands. Morecraft backed Mitrione up with a hard one-two, but Mitrione fired right back with a big left cross. Mitrione landed two punched and avoided a clinch. More punches scored for Mitrione and he hurt Morecraft with a third flurry. Morecraft fell to the mat, but managed to recover and wound up on top of Mitrione. The fighters stood and Mitrione landed punches on the way. 10-9 Mitrione. Could easily be 10-8.

Round 2:
Mitrione landed a leg kick and a left hook to open round two, and blocked a head kick from Morecraft. A one-two and another leg kick scored for Mitrione and Morecraft clinched. Mitrione separated and missed with a head kick. Morecraft began to land leg kicks once again, then clinched and took Mitrione down. Mitrione managed to work back to his feet and threw punches to the body.

Morecraft scored another takedown and wound up in Mitrione’s guard. Little transpired and the fighters were stood up. Morecraft stumbled while trying for a takedown and looked to have injured his knee. He stood up and Mitrione floored him with a three-punch combo that sent Morecraft’s mouthpiece flying. Mitrione walked away rather than following up with more strikes and the fight was stopped.

Winner: Matt Mitrione by KO (Punches) at 4:28 of round two. He improves to 5-0-0.
