A rematch between submission specialist Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler and fellow EliteXC veteran Kelly “Blood Red” Kobold is currently in the works for Cage Fighting Xtreme: “Spring Brawl” on April 21st in Fargo, North Dakota. The fighters first faced each other back in May 2004.

Event matchmaker Chris Nelson confirmed with MMARising.com that verbal agreements are in place for the tentative rematch. Bout agreements have not yet been signed. Baszler won four straight fights in 2010, while Kobold returned from a lengthy hiatus with a quick submission victory in April.

Baszler (14-6-0) is renowned for her wide array of submission holds including the rarely-seen Twister; a technique that she has used to submit both Keiko “Tama Chan” Tamai and Megumi Yabushita. All but one of the catch wrestler’s victories have come via tapout and she won the 2010 FCF Women’s Grand Prix by defeating Yabushita, Strikeforce contender Alexis Davis and Adrienna Jenkins in successive bouts. Most recently, Baszler captured The Cage Inc.’s 140-pound women’s title by submitting Elaina “Beef” Maxwell, but she has been inactive since the November 2010 championship bout.

Kobold (17-3-1) reigned unbeaten through her first 17 fights and totalled notable wins over Baszler and Jenkins along the way. Kobold held a significant experience advantage over Baszler in the pair’s first meeting and stopped the grappler with punches midway through the second round. She suffered her first career defeats against standouts Tara LaRosa and Julie “Fireball” Kedzie in 2007, but received a big opportunity in October 2008 against Gina “Conviction” Carano on CBS television. Kobold came up short against Carano and took a full two and a half years off before returning to submit Pipi Taylor last year.

Despite a lengthy layoff of her own, Baszler will have a chance to continue her string of victories while also avenging the first defeat of her pro career if she is able to get past Kobold in April. The bout, should it be signed and made official, is expected to be featured prominently on the “Spring Brawl” card, which will be co-promoted by CFX and Crowbar MMA. The event is targeted for April 21st at the Scheels Arena in Fargo, North Dakota.
