Ukrainian prospect Maryna “The Iron Woman” Moroz looks to rebound from the first loss of her career when she returns to the Octagon on April 10th at UFC Fight Night 86: “Rothwell vs Dos Santos” in Zagreb, Croatia. Moroz faces UFC newcomer Cristina “Barbie” Stanciu in a strawweight bout.
UFC officials announced the matchup this weekend. Moroz shocked many when she upset Joanne “JoJo” Calderwood in her UFC debut, but she was recently outpointed by Valérie “Trouble” Létourneau at UFC Fight Night 74. The undefeated Stanciu has knocked out or submitted four of her five foes.
Moroz (6-1-0) has established herself as both an upset artist and a proven finisher in her MMA career, which began with a submission victory in November 2013. She then travelled to China and upset the country’s top two female fighters, Feier Huang and Jin “The Fighting Rose” Tang, in successive bouts for Kunlun Fight. After racking up two more first-round stoppage wins, Moroz made her Octagon debut this past April and submitted Calderwood in just 90 seconds. The win established Moroz as a top 115-pound prospect, but her rise up the ranks was halted by Létourneau in August.
Stanciu (5-0-0) has quietly made a name for herself in her home country of Romania by compiling a solid five-fight winning streak to begin her pro career. Competing as a flyweight, the talented 21-year-old has finished four opponents inside the first round including a submission victory over the previously unbeaten Diana “The Warrior Princess” Belbita. Stanciu now takes a significant step up in competition to face Moroz in her Octagon debut, but a victory would immediately establish Stanciu as a fighter to watch in the UFC’s competitive strawweight division.
UFC Fight Night 86: “Rothwell vs Dos Santos” takes place on April 10th at Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia. The event is headlined by a heavyweight bout between “Big” Ben Rothwell and former UFC champion Junior “Cigano” dos Santos.
