A flyweight matchup between Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Peña and DeAnna Bennett has been added to the upcoming Showdown Fights 10: “Collard vs Clements” card on February 8th in Orem, Utah. MMARising.com confirmed plans for the bout with multiple sources on Sunday evening.
Peña looks to rebound from the first loss of her pro career in April when she sustained a broken arm in a bout with Sarah “Cheesecake” Moras. She had finished all three of her pro opponents prior to the setback. Bennett remains unbeaten in her career and will have the hometown Orem crowd on her side.
Peña (3-1-0) began her career with three straight wins as an amateur in 2009 and made a successful jump to the professional ranks with two more stoppage wins before the end of the year. Her aggressive fighting style earned her a fight under the Strikeforce banner in May 2010, but the bout was scrapped when opponent Kerry Vera suffered a knee injury. Peña, herself, sat out the rest of 2010 and nearly all of 2011 after tearing the ACL and meniscus in her knee. She returned to the cage in December 2011 and submitted Rachael Swatez.
This past April, just three weeks after being struck by a car, Peña moved up in weight to face Moras at Conquest of the Cage 11. Moras broke Peña’s arm with an armbar early in the second stanza. Peña fought on until the end of the round, but the cageside physician waved off the fight. The 23-year-old now looks to get back in the win column as she steps into the bout with Bennett on short notice.
Bennett (1-0-0) gives up an experience edge to her opponent, but she has thus far looked impressive in each of her three pro and amateur bouts. The talented Muay Thai practitioner began her MMA career in 2011 with back-to-back wins and turned pro in her Showdown Fights debut this past February. Facing another experienced opponent, Andrea “Killer” Miller, Bennett overwhelmed her foe with punches on the ground en route to a first-round TKO triumph.
In May, Bennett was scheduled to face her toughest opponent to date, Strikeforce veteran Colleen “The Beautiful Disaster” Schneider, at Showdown Fights 7. However, that bout was scrapped and Bennett will now make her return to action for the first time since defeating Miller. Bennett is one of the more skilled strikers in the female flyweight division and she now aims for the biggest win of her young career when she faces Peña next month.
