Chan Sung Jung vs Dustin Poirier Headlines UFC On Fuel 3A featherweight bout between top contenders “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung and Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier will headline UFC on Fuel TV 3 on May 15th in Fairfax, Virginia. UFC officials announced the fight today after both fighters campaigned for the matchup earlier this week.

Jung has posted back-to-back wins inside the Octagon via the rarely-seen Twister submission and a seven-second knockout, respectively, since he made the jump to the UFC in March. Poirier has won five straight fights and finished Max Holloway in impressive fashion at UFC 143 this past weekend.

Jung (12-3-0) made a big impact in his April 2010 WEC debut against Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia, and while he came out on the wrong side of a contentious Split Decision, the Korean standout became an instant fan favourite. Jung was knocked out for the first time in his career in his second and final WEC appearance, but his fan-friendly style earned him a spot on the UFC’s roster this past year. Jung made the most of it by submitting Garcia with just one second left in the second round of their rematch and shockingly knocked out Mark “The Machine” Hominick in only seven seconds at UFC 140. With the UFC Featherweight Championship now in his sights, Jung could potentially earn a shot at the title if he is able to get past Poirier in the May headliner.

Poirier (12-1-0) earned a spot in the WEC after posting stoppage wins in each of his first seven fights. His WEC debut, much like Jung’s, ended in a decision defeat, but Poirier has since rallied back with big victories over some of the division’s rising stars and prospects. Poirier fought three times inside the Octagon in 2011 and put on impressive performances against former number one contender Josh “The Fluke” Grispi and Pablo “The Scarecrow” Garza. He was equally dominant in dispatching the previously unbeaten Holloway at UFC 143 in a fight that Poirier finished via a mounted triangle armbar. While talk turned to an immediate title shot for the Louisiana native, Poirier instead campaigned for a fight with Jung and he has now been granted his wish.

UFC on Fuel TV 3 takes place on May 15th at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia. The bout between Jung and Poirier will headline the card.
