Brazilian striker Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos will welcome top Canadian prospect Jordan “Young Gun” Mein to the Strikeforce cage when the two face off on September 10th. Verbal agreements are now in place for the welterweight matchup, which was announced by the promotion today.
A location and venue have not been announced for the event, but reports suggest that Strikeforce may make its Canadian debut in the province of Ontario for the September 10th card. Santos is coming off of a title fight loss to Nick Diaz, while Mein has won five straight fights and nine of his last ten.
Santos (18-14-0) holds 16 stoppage wins to date and is renowned for his knock out or be knocked out style that has resulted in many legendary brawls over the years. The striker has shown discipline in recent fights, however, and looked to be seconds away from winning two straight rounds against Diaz before succumbing to an armbar late in round two. Prior to that, Santos stopped DREAM champ Marius Zaromskis in dominant fashion in his welterweight debut for Strikeforce. A win over Mein, a rising star, would put Santos back in the title hunt.
Mein (22-7-0) signed with Strikeforce late last week and he won’t have an easy debut in the promotion, but Mein has already picked up recent victories over UFC veterans Joe Riggs and Josh Burkman. The Canadian standout has lost just one time in his last ten fights, via decision to another UFC veteran, Jason High. Like Santos, Mein is a proven finisher and has stopped 19 of his opponents to date with a fairly even split between knockout and submission wins. He now prepares for his Strikeforce debut, which make take place in his native Canada.
The Strikeforce event on September 10th features a Strikeforce Middleweight Championship bout between Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza and Luke Rockhold.
