The Bellator Fighting Championships 115-pound women’s tournament is set to conclude at Bellator 34 on October 28th. The finals of the eight-woman bracket will take place on the season-ending card, while the semi-finals are set for Bellator 29 on September 16th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Megumi Fujii, a tournament favourite who won her first-round matchup at Bellator 24, posted the updated schedule on her blog yesterday. She will face the winner of next Thursday’s Bellator 26 bout between Lisa Ward and Aisling “Ais The Bash” Daly in the next round of the tournament.
Fujii (21-0-0), the top female fighter in mixed martial arts, defeated late replacement Carla Esparza in a competitive bout last Thursday to advance to the tournament semi-finals. She will either face Ward for a second time or take on the unbeaten Daly, who hails from Ireland. The other side of the tournament bracket will feature Jessica “Jag” Aguilar (9-3-0), who submitted Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez in the main event of Bellator 24. She will face the winner of tomorrow night’s bout between Jessica Pene (7-0-0) and Zoila “The Warrior Princess” Frausto (7-1-0).
Bellator 29, which will feature the semi-finals of the women’s tournament, will mark the first time that Bellator has travelled to the state of Wisconsin. The promotion has previously made stops all across the United States and will continue its expansion at The Rave; a landmark building in Milwaukee. The athletic commission in Wisconsin is still new and recent events, most notably the Strikeforce women’s tournament in Arizona last weekend, have proven that inexperienced officials can have an adverse effect on in-cage competition. However, reports suggest that the Wisconsin commission is working hard to ensure that Bellator’s first trip to the state goes off without a hitch.
Bellator’s third season wraps up on October 28th at Bellator 34 in Hollywood, Florida. The final round of the women’s tournament, as well as a likely Bellator Middleweight Championship bout involving Hector Lombard, will be featured on the card.
