Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez Targeted For UFC 121After successfully retaining the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 116, Brock Lesnar may make his next title defence as early as October. MMAFighting.com reports that a bout between Lesnar and unbeaten rising star Cain Velasquez is planned for UFC 121 on October 23rd.

MMAjunkie.com first reported on the planned date for the event, which is expected to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. UFC President Dana White stated that both fighters have agreed to face each other. Velasquez was previously announced as the next title challenger.

Lesnar (5-1-0) nearly saw his career disappear before his eyes last year, as the former professional wrestler was sidelined for just shy of a full calendar year after a battle with diverticulitis. After changing his diet and making a remarkable recovery, Lesnar returned at UFC 116 against Shane Carwin and survived early danger before submitting Carwin in the second round. Lesnar was noticeably humble following the fight, which was attributed to his new lease on life after battling the illness. He will face an even tougher test to his UFC crown in his next title defence.

Velasquez (8-0-0), much like Lesnar, debuted in the UFC with limited experience and a world of potential. He has since run through the opposition placed before him and is coming off of impressive victories over ex-IFL heavyweight standout “Big” Ben Rothwell and former PRIDE and UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. The UFC 110 stoppage of Nogueira solidified Velasquez’s place as the next title challenger and he will finally receive his first crack at UFC gold should the bout with Lesnar proceed.

UFC 121 has yet to be officially announced, but is targeted for October 23rd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Lesnar and Carwin would serve as the night’s main event.
