A lightweight title eliminator between Kenny “KenFlo” Florian and Gray “The Bully” Maynard has been signed for the main card of UFC 118 in Boston, Massachusetts. Florian, a Boston native, confirmed that the bout was set during an episode of MMA Live this evening.
UFC 118 will be the promotion’s first card in the state and is tentatively set for August 28th. It is expected to be headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship rematch between Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and “The Prodigy” BJ Penn. Florian and Maynard would battle to face the winner.
Florian (13-4-0) has been a staple of the top half of the UFC’s lightweight division for over three years and has twice challenged for the promotion’s 155-pound title. While the championship eluded him on both occasions, Florian has not lost a non-title fight since April of 2005 at 185 pounds. A proven finisher, Florian has stopped 12 opponents thus far and has won back-to-back fights over former Strikeforce champ Clay “The Carpenter” Guida and long-time PRIDE ace Takanori “Fireball Kid” Gomi. He now looks to get a third crack at title gold, but must first get past Maynard, who has yet to lose.
Maynard (9-0-0, 1 NC) has seemingly been one win away from a title shot for nearly a year, but lacklustre performances and close decision victories have not endeared him to UFC President Dana White. Maynard has not finished a fight since September 19, 2007 when he knocked out Joe Vedepo in just nine seconds. While Maynard is the only man to have ever beaten current champ Frankie “The Answer” Edgar, he was fortunate to escape with a razor-thin Split Decision over fringe contender Nate Diaz in his most recent bout. A loss to Florian would likely send Maynard out of the title picture.
UFC 118 is planned for August 28th at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts and is expected to be headlined by a rematch between Edgar and Penn for the UFC Lightweight Championship.
