Frankie Edgar vs BJ Penn 2 Planned For UFC 118Following his upset victory over former UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn at UFC 112, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar may square off with “The Prodigy” for a second time in his first title defence at UFC 118. Fighters Only Magazine is reporting that the fight is in the works for the August 28th event in Boston, Massachusetts.

Edgar emerged victorious with a hard-fought but contentious Unanimous Decision win over Penn on April 10th in a bout where judge Doug Crosby controversially scored all five rounds for the challenger.

Edgar (12-1-0) captured the title on the strength of a solid game plan that employed stick-and-move striking tactics and an effective arsenal of kicks and punching combinations. He took advantage of a relatively inactive Penn and scored with crisp strikes and a pair of brief takedowns in the later rounds to take the fight and the title. Popular opinion was split fairly evenly among those who watched the fight, with some believing that Penn deserved the win while others sided with the new champion. The close nature of the fight prompted speculation that an immediate rematch may occur and that now appears to be the case.

Penn (15-6-1) is widely regarded as one of the best lightweights of all time, but has faced ups and downs throughout his career. He is 6-5 in his last 11 fights and the loss to Edgar not only took away Penn’s title but also ended his aspirations to make an imminent return to the welterweight division. Penn will now have to battle back in order to reclaim his title and his future would appear to lie within the 155-pound ranks until remaining challengers can be dispatched of. Penn appeared to be a step behind Edgar throughout much of their first meeting and will look to redeem himself if the rematch goes ahead at UFC 118.

The August card is also rumoured to be featuring a lightweight title eliminator between Massachusetts native Kenny “KenFlo” Florian and Gray “The Bully” Maynard. The fighters are reportedly in talks to sign on for the fight, but it is not yet confirmed. UFC 118 is set to take place on August 28th at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
