A light heavyweight bout between Matt “The Hammer” Hamill and “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine is in the works for The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale in June. MMAjunkie.com first reported on the planned bout earlier today and bout agreements could be finalised soon.
Both fighters are coming off of setbacks, though Hamill is technically undefeated in his last three fights. He was soundly beaten by Jon “Bones” Jones at the TUF 10 Finale, but was awarded a disqualification victory after Jones used illegal elbow strikes late in the first round.
Hamill (8-2-0) became an instant fan favourite after his time on The Ultimate Fighter 3. The standout wrestler, who is deaf, was an early favourite to win the third season of the show, but an injury forced him out of the competition. Hamill has since won seven of his nine bouts inside the Octagon, with a controversial decision loss to Michael “The Count” Bisping and a second-round stoppage at the hands of former champ Rich “Ace” Franklin as the lone blemishes. Hamill suffered a separated shoulder in his bout with Jones, but was fortunate to escape with a victory due to the illegal strikes.
Jardine (15-7-1) was seemingly one win away from a title shot after he dispatched of Forrest Griffin at UFC 66. However, after a shocking upset loss to Houston “The Assassin” Alexander, Jardine has since lost four of his last six fights. He holds recent wins over former long-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and Brandon “The Truth” Vera, but has lost three straight fights. Jardine’s two most recent losses have both come by knockout. He will need a big victory over Hamill or he could potentially be cut from the promotion.
The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale is tentatively set for June 19th at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will air live on SpikeTV.
