Fresh off of his victory over fellow UFC Hall of Famer Mark “The Hammer” Coleman at UFC 109, former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Randy “The Natural” Couture may clash with former 185-pound champ Rich “Ace” Franklin at UFC 115 on June 12th. Sherdog.com first reported on the proposed light heavyweight bout.
The fight remains in the “early stages of planning” and hinges partly on Couture’s availability due to his burgeoning film career. Couture confirmed plans for the bout earlier today.
Couture (18-10-0) has won two straight fights since dropping back down to the light heavyweight division after losses to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira at heavyweight. He earned a close and contested decision victory over Brandon “The Truth” Vera at UFC 105 and dispatched of Coleman in just over six minutes in their headlining bout at UFC 109 on Saturday. A third straight win at 205 could potentially place Couture in line for a title shot.
Franklin (25-5-0, 1 NC) has recently engaged in 195-pound catchweight bouts as he works back up to the light heavyweight division after a second crushing loss to UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva back at UFC 77. He has gone 3-2 since the loss to Silva, but is coming off of a one-sided loss to Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort at UFC 103, which saw Franklin stopped in just three minutes. A win over Couture would get Franklin back on-track, but a title shot is likely not in his immediate future.
UFC 115 is set for June 12th at General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The proposed Couture-Franklin bout would likely serve as the night’s main event should it take place.
