One day after the announcement of a Lightweight title fight for UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, the event has received a second title bout. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva will defend his belt against former 205-pound champ Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort on the stacked card.
Belfort’s manager confirmed the fight with MMAjunkie.com, which comes on the heels of an announcement that the UFC has sold a 10% stake in its parent company, Zuffa, LLC, to the Abu Dhabi-owned Flash Entertainment corporation and Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Silva (25-4-0) has held the UFC Middleweight Championship for over three years, dating back to his three-minute destruction of then-champion Rich “Ace” Franklin at UFC 64 in October 2006. He has won 11 straight fights, with all but one coming inside the Octagon. Recently, Silva has challenged himself in the light heavyweight division and holds 205-pound wins over James “The Sandman” Irvin and former champion Forrest Griffin.
Silva was originally set to face Belfort at UFC 108, but was unable to return to competition in time following elbow surgery. He has since resumed training and is said to be looking forward to the fight with Belfort, who once held the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. The Brazilian compatriots were once training partners, but now find themselves on opposing sides in a battle for the UFC’s 185-pound crown.
Belfort (19-8-0) returned to the Octagon at UFC 103 and picked up a three-minute stoppage win of his own over Franklin. He had previously knocked out Terry Martin and Matt “The Law” Lindland for Affliction before the promotion ceased operations. With 13 wins coming by a form of knockout, Belfort is no stranger to engaging in stand-up wars with his opponents and he may find himself in another one when he challenges Silva.
News of the minority sale of Zuffa to Flash Entertainment broke earlier this week and UFC President Dana White confirmed with MMAFighting.com that Flash may build a new venue in order to house UFC 112. How the new deal between Flash and Zuffa will affect the Ultimate Fighting Championship remains to be seen, but the promotion’s April 10th card will be the first in the Middle East.
UFC 112 also features a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between champion “The Prodigy” BJ Penn and top contender Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and a welterweight contest pitting former champion Matt Hughes against Renzo Gracie. The event takes place on April 10th in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
