Less than two weeks after it was postponed from the upcoming UFC 108 card, a pivotal heavyweight bout between former PRIDE and UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and undefeated rising star Cain Velasquez has been rescheduled for UFC 110 on February 21, 2010 in Australia.
Nogueira was forced to withdraw from the UFC 108 meeting due to another severe staph infection, but his twin brother Rogerio has since stated that he will be returning to training shortly.
Nogueira (32-5-1, 1 NC) was suffering from a serious knee injury and a very bad staph infection going into his disastrous UFC 92 bout with Frank Mir, but opted to compete anyway. He learned from his mistake and opted to wait until he was 100% to face Velasquez.
The legend will now square off with the highly-touted MMA prodigy at UFC 110 in a bout that will more than likely determine the #1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight (or Interim Heavyweight) Championship, pending a fight between champion Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
Velasquez (7-0-0) has stopped all but one of his opponents thus far and is coming off of a one-sided win over former IFL standout “Big” Ben Rothwell. However, his jiu-jitsu has appeared to be one of the weaker parts of his game and Nogueira is one of the best submission fighters in the sport.
Velasquez would be wise to shed his traditional game plan of takedowns and ground control in favour of keeping the fight standing so that he can avoid the submission mastery of Nogueira.
However, just as twin brother Rogerio showed in his own knockout of Luiz Cane at UFC 106, Rodrigo is more than competent on the feet and could pose serious problems for Velasquez there as well.
UFC 110 is set for February 21, 2010 at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
