Looking to add more depth to their growing welterweight division, Strikeforce has signed DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis to a multi-fight deal. The native of Lithuania, who has won three straight fights by head-kick knockout, could make his debut for the promotion as early as December 19th.
A former contender in Cage Rage, Zaromskis rose to fame as the underdog winner of the 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix. He captured the crown with a brutal knockout of Jason High at Dream.10.
Zaromskis (13-3-0) has only gone the distance once in his career and has knocked out ten of his opponents thus far.
He followed up on his remarkable run in the DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix with a 19-second head-kick knockout of Myeon Ho Bae at Deam.12: “The Cage of the Rising Sun” on October 25th.
With three straight knockouts via head kick, comparisons between Zaromskis and feared striker and 2006 PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix Champion Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović have already begun.
Zaromskis could immediately find himself in title contention in Strikeforce if he is successful in his debut. Among his potential opponents are final IFL Welterweight Champion Jay Hieron and former UFC and EliteXC contender Nick Diaz.
In addition, final EliteXC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields has expressed interest in competing in both the middleweight and welterweight divisions. He will face Jason “Mayhem” Miller to crown a new Strikeforce Middleweight Champion on November 7th.
With his exciting style and string of recent highlight-reel knockouts, Zaromskis is sure to be a welcome addition to the Strikeforce roster.
