TUF 23 Quarterfinal: Tatiana Suarez Padilla Submits J.J. AldrichTeam Claudia kept its perfect record intact with another victory in tonight’s first female quarterfinal bout on The Ultimate Fighter 23: “Team Joanna vs Team Claudia.” First-pick Tatiana Suarez Padilla earned a second-round submission victory over Team Joanna’s number one pick J.J. Aldrich.

With coach Claudia “Claudinha” Gadelha looking on, Suarez Padilla secured a tight rear-naked choke that forced Aldrich to tap out. The submission finish gave Team Claudia an early 2-0 lead over the opposing squad, which is led by undefeated UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Suarez Padilla (3-0-0 pro), who discussed her past battle with cancer early in tonight’s episode, used her elite wrestling skills to control the action in her bout with Aldrich (2-1-0 pro). After a brief exchange of strikes on the feet, Suarez Padilla took Aldrich down and she trapped her in a front headlock. Aldrich got back to her feet momentarily, but Suarez Padilla took her down again and worked from back control. Aldrich fought off rear-naked chokes and eventually scrambled up, but Suarez Padilla was relentless in her pursuit of takedowns. She dragged Aldrich down and threatened with an Anaconda choke.

In round two, Aldrich landed stiff jabs to Suarez Padilla’s right eye, which began to swell up from the recurring damage. Suarez Padilla responded by taking Aldrich down once again and she worked from the top until she was able to take Aldrich’s back. Aldrich stood up, but Suarez Padilla pulled her down to the mat and used punches and elbows to set up a rear-naked choke. This time, Aldrich could not escape and she was forced to submit at the 3:14 mark of the second round.

Suarez Padilla’s victory kept control of the fight picks in the hands of Gadelha, who matched up Team Claudia’s Andrew Sanchez against Team Joanna’s Myron Dennis for next week.
