The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s doubleheader of events continued tonight with UFC Fight Night 56: “Shogun vs St. Preux” at Tancredo Neves Municipal Gymnasium in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua faced Ovince St. Preux in the light heavyweight main event.
Also on the card tonight, Warlley Alves battled Alan “Brahma” Jouban in the welterweight co-feature. Elsewhere at 170 pounds, Claudio “Hannibal” Silva met Leon “Rocky” Edwards and Dhiego Lima squared off against Jorge “Blade” de Oliveira. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the main card.
Ovince “OSP” St. Preux vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Round 1:
St. Preux dropped Rua very early in the fight with a counter left hook. Rua fell forward to the ground and St. Preux unloaded with a barrage of unanswered left hands until the brief bout was stopped.
Winner: Ovince St. Preux by TKO (Punches) at 0:34 of round one. He improves to 17-6-0.
Warlley Alves vs Alan “Brahma” Jouban
Round 1:
Alves took Jouban down right away and assaulted him with big punches from the top. Jouban appeared to be in trouble, but he weathered the storm and Alves used a guillotine choke to move to mount. Jouban scrambled up to his feet and blocked a head kick. He held Alves against the fence and landed an elbow and a knee. Alves pushed him away, but Jouban rushed forward with punches and a body kick. He tried to trip Alves, but Alves stayed on his feet and landed a head kick. Jouban hurt him with a liver kick late in the round. 10-9 Alves.
Round 2:
Alves took Jouban down in round two and Jouban countered with rubber guard. Alves moved to half-guard, but Jouban used the cage to work back to his feet. He attempted a head kick and followed with a combination that was met by a right hook from Alves. More right hands landed for Alves and Jouban’s left eye began to swell up. He pressed forward with a combination and Alves taunted. Jouban backed Alves up with two left hooks to the body and time was called after Alves was poked in the eye. The fight continued and time expired seconds later. 10-9 Jouban.
Round 3:
Alves was kicked in the groin early in round three and time was called again. After the restart, Jouban landed a series of punches and Alves answered back with a right hook. He landed body kicks and picked up the pace with punches. Jouban stunned him with punches and Alves complained about an eyepoke, but action continued and Jouban battered Alves with left and right hooks. A head kick partially landed for Jouban and Alves slowed way down. Jouban flurried with more punches until the final bell. 10-9 Jouban.
Winner: Warlley Alves by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 8-0-0.
Claudio Henrique “Hannibal” da Silva vs Leon “Rocky” Edwards
Round 1:
Silva caught a flying knee and took Edwards down early on. He struck from the top until Edwards scrambled out and escaped to his feet. Silva landed an overhand left and followed with a right hook to the eye. He tried for a takedown, but Edwards reversed on the way down. The fight returned to the feet and Edwards landed a pair of vicious left hands. He followed with elbows and a head kick and Silva slowed way down in the final minute. Edwards landed a knee just before the bell and appeared to steal the round. 10-9 Edwards.
Round 2:
Time was called early in round two after Edwards was kicked in the groin. Action resumed and Silva landed a nice leg kick. Big left hands landed for both men and Edwards briefly tripped Silva after catching a kick. The fighters stood and Silva was warned for holding Edwards’s shorts. Edwards punched to the body, but Silva secured a late takedown into mount and rained down punches from the top. He took Edwards’s back and tried for a rear-naked choke and an armbar before time expired. 10-9 Silva due to the late rally.
Round 3:
Silva secured a takedown in round three and passed to mount. Edwards regained half-guard, but Silva took his back and used punches to set up a rear-naked choke attempt. Edwards rolled over and Silva looked for an arm-triangle choke. Edwards escaped and swept into top position. Silva attacked with an armbar and a triangle choke from his back. The fight returned to the feet and Edwards landed a flurry before the bell. 10-9 Silva.
Winner: Claudio Henrique da Silva by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 11-1-0.
Dhiego Lima vs Jorge “Blade” de Oliveira
Round 1:
Lima established his jab and kept de Oliveira at bay in the opening minute. De Oliveira eventually scored with a leg kick and he rocked Lima with a left hook. Lima stumbled backwards and the fighters clinched against the cage. Lima got de Oliveira down into side control and moved to mount soon after. Punches and elbows scored for Lima, who locked on a tight arm-triangle choke. He let it go and landed a blatantly illegal knee just before the bell. The referee did not punish Lima at all and time expired. 10-9 Lima.
Round 2:
Lima quickly took de Oliveira back down in round two and mounted him again. He landed punches from the top and looked to set up a keylock. De Oliveira defended against the submission, but Lima landed some hard punches and elbows from the top and transitioned to back control. He locked on a rear-naked choke and de Oliveira somehow escaped. The fight returned to the feet and de Oliveira pressed forward with punches. Lima dumped him to the mat again and struck from mount until the end of the round. 10-9 Lima.
Round 3:
Lima used a leg-sweep takedown to get de Oliveira back down to the mat in round three. De Oliveira scrambled up and Lima landed a body kick. More kicks to the body scored for Lima and he countered a leg kick with a lead left hook. Lima took de Oliveira down and struck from the top until de Oliveira battled back to his feet. Lima took him down once more and finished the round with punches from mount. 10-9 Lima.
Winner: Dhiego Lima by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 10-2-0.
Juliana “Ju Thai” de Lima Carneiro vs Nina “The Strina” Ansaroff
Round 1:
Both women landed leg kicks in the opening seconds and Ansaroff swarmed on Lima with punches. A clinch ensued against the cage and Lima pushed Ansaroff backwards to the ground. She settled into Ansaroff’s guard and landed short punches until Ansaroff tried to lock on a triangle choke. Lima slammed her way free and Ansaroff attempted another triangle.
Lima stood up to escape from the choke and she landed a knee as Ansaroff stood. Ansaroff jumped into a guillotine choke, but Lima pulled her head out and struck from Ansaroff’s guard. She postured up with punches and Ansaroff threw heel kicks to the kidneys. Time was called after Lima was illegally upkicked in the jaw. The fight resumed and the bell sounded seconds later. Close round. 10-9 Lima.
Round 2:
Ansaroff landed a spinning back kick to the body in round two and she followed with punches. Lima dove at her leg and secured an ankle pick takedown. She worked from the top until Ansaroff locked on a slick armbar from her back. Lima defended well and escaped, then tried for a heel hook. She used it to sweep back into top position and returned to Ansaroff’s guard.
The fighters were stood up after a lull in the action and Ansaroff missed with a spinning hook kick. Lima backed her up with a one-two and a body kick. Ansaroff threw more kicks to the lead leg and body of Lima, but Lima countered a jab by taking Ansaroff down just before the end of the round. 10-9 Lima.
Round 3:
The final round began with an exchange of chopping leg kicks and Ansaroff held Lima against the cage. She could not get Lima down and the crowd began to boo the lack of action. Lima threw punches to the body and elbows to the side of Ansaroff’s head. She stayed on her feet and landed short knees to Ansaroff’s midsection. The fighters were separated and Lima missed with a spinning backfist. Ansaroff stuffed a takedown and landed a body kick. She followed with more punches and a fatigued Lima answered with a knee. Ansaroff landed a spinning back kick and two winging right hooks before the bell. 10-9 Ansaroff, barely.
Winner: Juliana de Lima Carneiro by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. She improves to 7-2-0.
