Colleen Schneider, Cheryl Chan Victorious At Super Fight League 35Super Fight League women’s flyweight champ Colleen “The Thoroughbred” Schneider captured her second SFL title on Saturday night at Super Fight League 35 in Tacoma, Washington. Schneider defeated King of the Cage champion Brenda “Boom Boom” Gonzales in the one-sided co-main event.

Super Fight League’s lacklustre U.S. debut on Saturday also featured a second women’s bout on the preliminary card. In a 120-pound catchweight fight, Cheryl “Kid Kaos” Chan earned her first professional victory with a third-round submission of an overmatched “Relentless” Hadley Griffith.

Schneider (6-5-0) dominated all five rounds of tonight’s bantamweight title fight with Gonzales (5-2-0), who was never able to get anything going offensively. Schneider landed ground and pound after taking Gonzales down in round one and she later threatened with an armbar, but Gonzales escaped and she landed a nice upkick. Schneider was unfazed and she returned to Gonzales’s guard. She dropped back for a heel hook just before the bell, but time expired seconds later.

In the middle rounds, Schneider landed jabs and leg kicks on the feet and controlled the clinch battles with short strikes in close. Gonzales had brief success in round two by sweeping into Schneider’s guard after being taken down, but she was unable to do anything at all from top position. Schneider worked for an armbar and a triangle choke from her back, and she continued to attack with submissions later in the fight. In round four, she tried for a kimura on Gonzales’s left arm and battered the KOTC champ with punches from the top.

Heading into round five, Schneider was comfortably ahead on the scorecards and she landed more leg kicks early on. Schneider took Gonzales down and fought free from a loose guillotine choke attempt. She took Gonzales’s back in a scramble and landed some hard shots from back control. Gonzales rolled over and Schneider rained down punches until the final bell.

All three judges scored the bout for Schneider, who took a clear victory in the largely uneventful fight. The win earned Schneider her second SFL title. She previously captured the SFL Women’s Flyweight Championship in March 2013.

Winner: Colleen Schneider by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) after five rounds. She improves to 6-5-0 and becomes the first SFL America Women’s Bantamweight Champion.

Earlier on the card, Chan (1-3-0) notched her first pro win by submitting a badly bloodied Griffith (1-4-0) in the third round. Chan was the aggressor early in the bout and she threw a flying kick to the body and punches. Griffith answered back with leg kicks and right hands, but Chan scored with two head kicks and a series of hard kicks to Griffith’s lead leg. She took Griffith down and landed elbows from the top before the end of the opening round.

Chan landed another head kick in round two and Griffith replied with combinations. Chan connected with a knee and she took Griffith down into side control. Griffith gave up her back and Chan went to work in search of a rear-naked choke. She trapped Griffith in a body triangle and sunk in the choke, but time expired and Griffith appeared to be saved by the bell.

Griffith picked up the pace in the final round and she walked Chan down with punches, but Chan stayed calm and scored another takedown. She postured up with elbows from the top that opened a bad cut on Griffith’s forehead. Griffith bled all over the mat and Chan locked on a rear-naked choke that forced her to submit at the 2:04 mark.

Saturday’s victory was a long time coming for Chan, who enjoyed a successful amateur career before turning pro in July 2012. She suffered defeats in each of her first three professional fights prior to her SFL debut on Saturday. Griffith has now tasted defeat in four straight fights and she has been knocked out or submitted in all four losses.

Winner: Cheryl Chan by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 2:04 of round three. She improves to 1-3-0.
