TUF 18 Episode 3 Recap: Team Tate Retains, Modafferi-Rakoczy SetFormer Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha “Cupcake” Tate’s team retained control tonight with another key victory during The Ultimate Fighter 18 Episode 3. Team Tate’s Chris Holdsworth submitted UFC champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey’s team member Chris Beal.

Tonight’s win meant that Tate retained control of the fight picks, which are made at the conclusion of each bout. Next week, Team Tate representative Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi takes on former boxing champion Jessica “The Ragin'” Rakoczy in the second women’s quarterfinal fight.

In the lead-up to tonight’s fight, distrust began to surface among members of Team Tate when it was thought that Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Peña, who scored a huge victory one week ago, had leaked fight picks to the opposing team. Peña maintained that she had done no such thing, and it was later established that she was telling the truth, but the Washington native was portrayed as an outcast. Tempers also flared between coaches and bitter rivals Rousey and Tate during a UFC viewing party where both teams were present.

Once the fight began, Holdsworth surprised some by getting the better of the striking exchanges with Beal, who entered the bout with an injured hand. Holdsworth repeatedly scored with right hooks and he dropped Beal with a short right hand just shy of four minutes into the fight. He pounced on Beal and landed elbows, then locked on a guillotine choke for the tapout victory at the 4:20 mark of round one.

Having retained fight control, Tate opted to match up her most experienced fighter, Modafferi, against underdog Rakoczy in a battle between each team’s respective final picks. Modafferi and Rakoczy will face off next week, with the winner advancing on to the women’s semi-final round.

The Ultimate Fighter 18 airs weekly leading up to the finale on November 30th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  1. as happens too ofthe on TUF
I hate to see either Roxanne or Jessica be gone so soon
but cie la vie they’re big girls and will sink of swim on their own merrits

  2. Rakoczy shouldn’t be an underdog. Roxanne lost five in a row before her TUF fight. Rakoczy has the best striking in WMMA along with Holm, Cyborg, and de Randime. She has also improved on the ground and looks much stronger than Roxy.

    This could be a slaughter.
