Invicta FC 6 Bonuses: Smith vs Maia Named Fight Of The NightLeslie “The Peacemaker” Smith earned her third Fight of the Night bonus in her flyweight debut tonight at Invicta Fighting Championships 6 in Kansas City, Missouri. Smith scored a Unanimous Decision victory over Brazilian contender Jennifer Maia in an action-packed fight on the main card.

Former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion Jessica Penne won Submission of the Night tonight for her first-round rear-naked choke victory over Nicdali “The Night Queen” Rivera-Calanoc. “The Queen of Mean” Miriam Nakamoto won Knockout of the Night for her stoppage of “Diamond” Duda Yankovich.

Smith (6-3-1) and Maia (7-3-1) fought back and forth for 15 minutes in a flyweight title eliminator bout tonight. Smith caught a kick in the opening round and took Maia down, but she had to fight off of an armbar. Smith countered with an armbar of her own and the fighters traded power punches on the feet.

Maia secured a takedown in the second round, but Smith used a kneebar attempt to sweep into top position and she scored with elbows. Back on the feet, Smith scored with a combination and Maia took her down again. Smith remained active from her back and she transitioned from an armbar to an omoplata and finally to a toe hold.

In the final round, the fighters teed off with punches right away after Maia landed a front kick to the face. Maia took Smith down and Smith quickly countered with an arm-triangle choke. Maia escaped and worked for a Brabo Choke. In the late stages, Smith blasted Maia with punches from mount and she kept Maia pinned down until the final bell.

The judges returned scores of 29-28 and 30-27 twice for Smith, who took the Unanimous Decision win. Both Smith and Maia pocketed an extra $1500 for the Fight of the Night.

Penne (11-2-0) traded cautious strikes with Rivera-Calanoc (8-7-0) until just past the midway point of the first round when Rivera-Calanoc landed a nice right hand. Penne took her down and eventually got to mount. She landed punches until Rivera-Calanoc gave up her back. From there, Penne locked on a rear-naked choke and Rivera-Calanoc was forced to submit at the 4:57 mark of round one. The victory earned Penne an extra $1000 for Submission of the Night.

In a striker versus striker matchup, Nakamoto (2-1-0, 1 NC) left no doubt as to who was the superior fighter in her bout against Yankovich (1-2-0). Nakamoto hurt Yankovich with a knee early in round one and followed with punches on the ground. Yankovich survived and battled back to her feet, but Nakamoto dropped her with another knee. After a final barrage of punches, the fight was stopped and Nakamoto earned the TKO win at the 2:08 mark of round one. Nakamoto received an extra $1000 for the Knockout of the Night.

  1. Jennifer Maia showed a lot of stand-up skill in this fight, outstriking the great Leslie Smith for a good part of rounds 1 and 2.

Hope to see her fight again soon.
