Knockout artist Junior “Cigano” dos Santos needed just 64 seconds to capture the UFC Heavyweight Championship tonight at UFC On FOX 1 in Anaheim, California. Dos Santos dropped former champion Cain Velasquez with a looping right hook and finished the fight with punches on the ground.
The brief bout aired alone on the promotion’s historic first broadcast on the FOX network, which served as a prequel for a seven-year deal between the UFC and FOX that kicks off in 2012. Dos Santos will make the first defence of his new title against the winner of Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar.
After an early leg kick from Velasquez (9-1-0), dos Santos (14-1-0) set the tone with a cracking right hand and shrugged off a clinch attempt. The fighters exchanged hooks and Velasquez continued to throw leg kicks, but dos Santos sent him crashing to the mat with a looping right hook to the temple. Velasquez tried to regain his senses on the ground, but dos Santos unloaded a flurry of punches and the fight was stopped.
Winner: Junior dos Santos by KO (Punches) at 1:04 of round one. He improves to 14-1-0 and becomes the new UFC Heavyweight Champion.
With the title victory, dos Santos has now won nine straight fights, with eight of those victories coming inside the Octagon. He will next face the winner of the upcoming bout between former UFC champion Brock Lesnar and ex-Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 on December 30th.
