XFC 14: "Resurrection" Live Play-By-Play & ResultsXtreme Fighting Championships returned after a ten-month hiatus tonight at XFC 14: “Resurrection” from the UCF Arena in Orlando, Florida. The event was headlined by a 160-pound catchweight bout as former WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie “C-4” Varner squared off against “Ladies Love” Nate Jolly.

In the co-main event, UFC veteran Carmelo “The Fury” Marrero faced Scott “The Bear” Barrett in a heavyweight bout, while unbeaten prospect Marianna “The Crushen Russian” Kheyfets battled Molly “The Maulinator” Helsel at 125 pounds. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for tonight’s card.

 

Jamie “C-4” Varner vs “Ladies Love” Nate Jolly

Round 1:
Varner countered right hands from Jolly early on with punches of his own. Jolly took Varner down, but Varner rolled for a kneebar. Jolly escaped and Varner stood up. Jolly landed a knee to the body, but Varner took him down. Varner postured up and stood over Jolly, then unloaded with punches until Jolly was rendered unconscious.

Winner: Jamie Varner by KO (Punches) at 1:09 of round one. He improves to 18-6-1, 2 NC.

 

Carmelo “The Fury” Marrero vs Scott “The Bear” Barrett

Round 1:
Marrero landed a knee to the groin early in the fight, but flurried with punches when the referee did not immediately intervene. Time was called for Barrett to recover and the fighters traded right hands after the restart. Marrero landed a knee to the body and stuffed a takedown. He landed more knees as Barrett pressed him up against the cage. The fighters separated and Marrero landed two right hands. He followed with more punches, but Barrett managed to land two of his own.

Two right hands and a knee landed for Barrett and he clinched again. Marrero broke free, but Barrett clinched once more. He backed away and threw a one-two, but Marrero was more effective with his punches. Marrero jabbed and landed a threw-punch flurry. Barrett took Marrero down against the cage and threw short right hands from the top. He tried to move to mount, but Marrero defended. Barrett began bleeding slightly from a cut above the right eye. 10-9 Barrett.

Round 2:
Big right hands were exchanged in the second round and both fighters landed, but neither one could score a knockdown. Barrett clinched, but Marrero circled out and landed left and right hooks. Barrett answered with an uppercut and a knee. Time was called after Marrero was kneed in the groin. Action resumed and Marrero landed a nice right hand. He followed with another one and a knee.

Barrett clinched against the cage and the fighters exchanged knees to the body. From a collar tie, both fighters threw a series of right hands, but Marrero got the better of the exchange and followed with a flurry. Barrett clinched up once more and Marrero landed knees to his ribs. More knees scored for Marrero and Barrett answered with two uppercuts. He tried for a takedown, but could not get it. 10-9 Marrero.

Round 3:
The final round began slowly until the fighters traded punches briefly and Barrett opened a cut near Marrero’s left eye. Marrero landed knees and Barrett’s nose appeared to be broken. It bled heavily, but he clinched and backed Marrero up to the cage. Barrett threw a right hook to the body, but Marrero outlanded him with knees three to one. Barrett landed an uppercut and ate a three-punch combo for his troubles.

Marrero caught a kick and looked to trip Barrett to the mat, but Barrett stayed on his feet. A hard body kick landed for Marrero and the fighters clinched. Little transpired and the referee called for a break. Barrett landed more uppercuts and Marrero replied with a standing elbow. Looping punches landed for both and Marrero began to jab at Barrett’s injured nose. Marrero landed punches and avoided a knee in the final seconds. 10-9 Marrero.

Winner: Carmelo Marrero by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 14-5-0, 1 NC.

 

Marianna “The Crushen Russian” Kheyfets vs Molly “The Maulinator” Helsel

Round 1:
Kheyfets threw front kicks to the body early on and Helsel countered with right hooks. Another front kick from Kheyfets backed Helsel up and the pair traded punches. Helsel caught a body kick and took Kheyfets down. Helsel backed her up to the cage and stood up. She landed a right hand as Kheyfets upkicked from the ground. Helsel returned to Kheyfets’s guard and kept her pinned against the fence.

Helsel postured up and Kheyfets attempted a triangle choke. Helsel stood and landed two punches as Kheyfets kicked to the legs and body. Helsel again returned to Kheyfets’s guard and the referee stood the fighters up. Helsel landed a lead left hook and a leg kick. Kheyfets answered with a right hook and a knee. Both fighters landed punches and Helsel followed with a leg kick. 10-9 Helsel.

Round 2:
Kheyfets countered a body kick with a one-two and a kick of her own in the second round. Her quick punches continued to land before Helsel could connect, but Helsel avoided a knee. Helsel jabbed and Kheyfets answered with a short right hook. Leg kicks landed for both fighters and Kheyfets threw a two-punch combo. Helsel landed a left hook and Kheyfets answered with a right.

Kheyfets landed a right cross and followed with a left hook. She jabbed as well and snapped Helsel’s head back momentarily with a right hook. Helsel landed a one-two and ate another leg kick. Kheyfets scored with a nice right hand and continued to find a home for her jab. Helsel’s nose began to bleed, but she countered a combination from Kheyfets with one of her own. 10-9 Kheyfets.

Round 3:
Kheyfets landed jabs and a right hand in the final round that caused Helsel’s nose to bleed heavily. A combination landed for Kheyfets and Helsel answered back with a right hook. Another right hand grazed Kheyfets’s jaw, but Kheyfets tagged Helsel with a four-punch combination. Both fighters threw jabs, but Kheyfets appeared to be more effective and she countered a leg kick with a right cross.

Kheyfets took Helsel down and passed from half-guard to side control, but Helsel scrambled out and returned to her feet. Kheyfets took her right back down and tried again to move from half-guard to side control. Helsel got back to full guard and Kheyfets threw punches to the body and head. The fighters stood up and Kheyfets landed jabs. She just missed with a right hand in the final seconds. 10-9 Kheyfets.

Winner: Marianna Kheyfets by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. She improves to 4-0-0.

 

Reggie “The Regulator” Pena vs Josh “The Hillbilly Heartthrob” Clark

Round 1:
Clark landed a knee to open the fight, but Pena countered with a takedown. Pena struck from the top and stood up, but Clark prevented him from passing guard on the ground and got back to his feet. Pena slammed Clark down and tried to set up a Brabo Choke from the top. Clark kicked him off and stood. He landed a counter right hand and a knee, but Pena took him back down.

Pena moved to mount very briefly, but Clark got back to full guard. Pena passed to the side and hunted for an arm-triangle choke. Clark rolled to his knees and Pena tried to take his back. Clark escaped and the fight returned to the feet. Clark landed an uppercut and a head kick, but Pena caught the kick and took him down. Clark attempted an armbar in the final seconds. Good round. 10-9 Pena, but not by much.

Round 2:
Pena landed a big left hook in round two and countered a takedown from Clark with a guillotine choke. Clark escaped and worked from Pena’s guard. Pena scrambled to his feet and slammed Clark down. Clark worked for an armbar and the fighters stood up. Wild punches were exchanged and Clark landed a leg kick. Clark tripped Pena for a second and landed a knee as the fight returned to the feet. Both fighters landed hooks and Clark kept Pena at bay with a knee.

Pena fired right back with a one-two and clinched. He backed Clark up to the cage and took him down. Pena stood up and rained down a series of right hands. Clark tried to defend with an armbar and a triangle choke. Pena freed himself and the fighters both stood up. Clark countered a takedown, but Pena stood and landed a knee and an uppercut. Clark landed a knee of his own. Another close and competitive round. 10-9 Pena.

Round 3:
Pena landed punches in the final round and sprawled out of a takedown from Clark. Pena punished him with strikes from the top as Clark fell to his back. Pena settled into Clark’s guard momentarily, but had to fight off a triangle choke and stood up. Pena moved to side control and threw elbows and hammerfists. Clark got back to full guard, but not before eating a series of right hands from Pena.

Clark continued to try to set up triangle chokes from the bottom, but Pena easily avoided danger and moved to half-guard. He scored with more hammerfists and the fighters stood. Clark landed a counter one-two as Pena closed the distance. He reversed Pena’s takedown and punched from Pena’s guard. As the fighters stood, Pena landed a big uppercut that hurt Clark and Clark fell to his stomach. Pena moved to mount and unloaded with punches. 10-9 Pena.

Winner: Reggie Pena by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 9-5-0.

 

Nicolae “The Armor” Cury vs Elijah “The Hero” Harshbarger

Round 1:
Harshbarger pushed forward with punches right away and tried for a takedown, but Cury reversed and threw him to the mat. Cury punched from the top in Harshbarger’s half-guard and moved to mount. He spun into an armbar and Harshbarger was forced to submit.

Winner: Nicolae Cury by Submission (Armbar) at 1:27 of round one. He improves to 6-2-0.

 

Carlos Mikey Gomez vs Mike “El Gringo Diablo” Bernhard

Round 1:
Both fighters missed with haymakers early on and Bernhard stuffed a takedown. He landed knees from a front headlock position and backed Gomez up to the cage. A clinch battle ensued with both fighters landing knees to the body. The referee called for a break and Gomez landed a leg kick. He tried for a takedown and Bernhard stuffed it again.

Gomez got Bernhard down on his second try and Bernhard tried for a Kimura from the bottom. Gomez defended and punched to the body. Gomez seemed to coax the referee to stand the fight up and the referee strangely obliged. The fighters clinched and exchanged more knees until the bell. Close round. 10-9 Bernhard, despite Gomez’s takedown.

Round 2:
Bernhard stuffed a takedown in the second round and looked to take Gomez’s back, but had to settle for top position in Gomez’s guard. The fighters stood and Bernhard landed a knee. He defended against a Gomez takedown attempt and landed more knees. Bernhard broke free of the clinch with a knee and a right hook. Gomez dropped him with a leg kick, but Bernhard immediately tried for an armbar.

Gomez tried to slam out of the submission, but Bernhard maintained his grip. Gomez managed to pull his arm out and took top position in side control. He moved to mount and Bernhard gave up his back. Gomez secured a rear-naked choke and Bernhard tapped out.

Winner: Carlos Mikey Gomez by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:50 of round two. He improves to 12-8-0.

 

John “The Mulatto Mauler” Mahlow vs Bruce “The Noose” Connors

Round 1:
Mahlow took Connors down early in the fight and avoided a guillotine choke attempt. He moved to side control and pressed Connors up against the cage. Mahlow threw short punches, but Connors managed to get back to butterfly guard and then full guard. He looked to set up a submission from the bottom, but Mahlow punched to the body.

Mahlow switched to elbows to the face and opened a cut near Connors’s right eye. He remained effective with elbows and continued to strike from the top until Connors stood and tried for a guillotine choke in the final seconds. Mahlow escaped and the fighters exchanged strikes. 10-9 Mahlow.

Round 2:
Mahlow kept his distance and landed leg kicks and single punches in the second round. The pace remained tempered as Connors seemed content to counterpunch as Mahlow continued to throw kicks and punches one at a time. Connors landed a nice one-two, but Mahlow answered with a pair of hard leg kicks. Connors tried for a takedown late in the uneventful round, but Mahlow remained on his feet. 10-9 Mahlow.

Round 3:
The final round began similarly to the second, with Mahlow throwing leg kicks and punches one strike at a time. Connors tried to answer back with punches of his own, but came up short. He landed a leg kick, but Mahlow responded with two in return. Mahlow landed another solid leg kick as the crowd grew restless. Connors connected with a kick-punch combo and a leg kick soon after. The fighters exchanged kicks, but the action was few and far between. Mahlow shrugged off a takedown. 10-10.

Winner: John Mahlow by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 13-12-0.
