Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez lived up to her nickname with a quick victory tonight at Dakota Fighting Championship 17: “Winter Brawl 2014” in Fargo, North Dakota. Alvarez choked out strawweight prospect Amber “The Apex Predator” Stautzenberger in round one of the co-main event on the card.
Also this evening, Jozette “The #1 Headbusta” Cotton kept her perfect professional record intact with a dominant Unanimous Decision victory at Dynasty Combat Sports 6: “The Future” in Omaha, Nebraska. Cotton defeated Jessica “Raising Havoc” Halverson in the 160-pound main event.

Voting for the 2013 Women’s Mixed Martial Arts Awards concluded earlier this month and winners have now been crowned in more than a dozen categories. This year, reigning Invicta FC Flyweight Champion Barb “Little Warrior” Honchak has been named Female Fighter of the Year.
As in past years, 2013 once again featured many excellent women’s bouts and voting was very close for 2013 Fight of the Year. That distinction goes to the spirited title fight between Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson and Jessica Penne at Invicta FC 5. A full list of all award winners is below.

Former Jewels postergirl Saori “Shooting Star” Ishioka returns to the ring for a special appearance at Deep Jewels 3 on February 16th in Tokyo, Japan. The popular karateka is scheduled to face off against ex-Jewels rival Mika “Future Princess” Nagano in Nagano’s retirement exhibition match.
Deep Jewels officials announced plans for the exhibition bout today. Ishioka has taken an extended hiatus from competition in order to focus on family life and last fought in March 2012 when she submitted “Windy” Tomomi Sunaba. She defeated Nagano on the inaugural Jewels card in late 2008.

The Ultimate Fighter 18 winner Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Peña will make her post-TUF Octagon debut on March 15th at UFC 171: “Hendricks vs Lawler” in Dallas, Texas. The Washington native faces Brazilian rising star Jéssica “Bate Estaca” Andrade in a featured bantamweight bout.
Fox Sports first reported on the planned matchup tonight. Peña became the first female TUF winner on November 30th when she stopped Jessica “The Ragin'” Rakoczy at the TUF 18 Finale. Andrade earned her first Octagon win when she defeated Rosi “The Surgeon” Sexton at UFC Fight Night 30.

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey earned her second win over Miesha “Cupcake” Tate in the co-main event of UFC 168 on December 28th. With the win, Rousey kept her perfect professional record intact and she remains the top-ranked female fighter in MMA today.
In the UFC 168 headliner, “All-American” Chris Weidman retained his spot atop the middleweight rankings by defeating Anderson “The Spider” Silva for a second time. At Invicta FC 7, Lauren Murphy became the promotion’s first bantamweight champ, and she continues to climb the 135-pound ranks.
