Shana Nelson Injured, Sarah D'Alelio To Face Vanessa Mariscal At Invicta FC 1A spinal injury has forced Shana “Rock Solid” Nelson out of her bout with Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio at Invicta Fighting Championships 1 on April 28th in Kansas City, Kansas. D’Alelio now faces Vanessa Mariscal on the card. MMARising.com confirmed the change with sources tonight.

D’Alelio makes her return to action for the first time since a controversial loss to current Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey in August. Mariscal, who was originally set to face Valérie Létourneau this Saturday in Ontario, has won both of her pro fights.

D’Alelio (4-2-0) turned pro in 2010 and fought five times before the end of the year. She won her first four pro fights, all by stoppage, before dropping a competitive decision to Jackson’s MMA Series champion Julie “Fireball” Kedzie in December. D’Alelio sat out the first half of 2011 before making her Strikeforce debut against Rousey this past August. In a very brief bout, D’Alelio was defeated by a Rousey armbar when referee Steve Mazzagatti intervened for a quick stoppage that drew criticism from some. Now looking to start a new winning streak, D’Alelio remains on the Invicta FC 1 main card, but she may now have to adjust her strategy after receiving a new opponent on short notice.

Mariscal (2-0-0) is a co-founder of the California-based VMAT Gym alongside veteran UFC light heavyweight Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko. The kickboxer and jiu-jitsu specialist made her pro MMA debut in late 2009 with a first-round submission victory over Jessica “Raising Havoc” Halverson. This past June, Mariscal returned to action at BlackEye Promotions 4 and forced one-time Strikeforce competitor Colleen “The Beautiful Disaster” Schneider to submit to a third-round rear-naked choke. Mariscal was originally set to face Létourneau in the main event of Freedom Fight: “Caged Combat” on Saturday night, but when that card was postponed, Mariscal stepped in to face D’Alelio in two weeks.

Invicta Fighting Championships 1 takes place on April 28th at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. The severity of Nelson’s injury is currently unknown and a timetable for her return to action was not immediately available.

  1. Damn, any word on how this happened?
Will this affect her daily life?
    Hope it isn’t too serious.

  2. In training, but not sure how. I don’t really have any details yet on the severity, but hopefully it won’t keep her out for long.

  3. It appears that the injury was actually quite serious and came from an accidental spike in training. She was taken to the ICU, but has been moved to a separate area of the hospital for recovery.
