Kim Couture Not Focused On Kerry VeraWith just one month to go before her biggest MMA fight to date against Kerry Vera, Kim “Sugar Free” Couture has opted to spend her time working in planned angles for professional wrestling promoter Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling rather than preparing for her opponent.

Couture debuted as a “fan” at a TNA pay-per-view event last night and began a scripted feud with Lisa Marie Varon (“Tara”), whom Couture has engaged in a war of words with over the past few months after Varon announced her intentions to compete in MMA.

Couture (1-1-0), the former wife of multi-time UFC champion Randy “The Natural” Couture, has made a series of confusing and, at times, ridiculous statements over the course of 2009 and appears to lack the maturity and respect level that her former husband has become famous for.

After losing her professional debut to Kim Rose in extremely lopsided fashion – in a fight that saw Couture walk out of the cage with a broken jaw and badly swollen and bloodied face – Couture picked up her first victory by stopping a vastly overmatched Lina Kvokov in Strikeforce last November.

The fight was a dreadful performance from both fighters, but much more so from Kvokov, who spent most of the fight backpedalling with her back to Couture and should never have been allowed to get into the cage.

Rather than focusing on the many areas of her game that needed improvement, Couture instead began an online feud with TNA’s Varon, who stated her intentions to begin training for a career in mixed martial arts earlier this year.

While the war of words created some publicity, disparaging comments from Couture, which often implied that Couture was an established star in MMA and should not have to sink to the level of fighting a “pro wrestler,” alienated Couture from many in the MMA media.

The reality is that Couture has competed just twice, dropped one of the most one-sided Unanimous Decisions in women’s MMA history in her pro debut and defeated a woman who had no business competing in the sport in her second fight.

Couture has not earned the right to be critical of others who are looking to get into MMA. Further, with her latest stunt, she has disrespected and overlooked Vera, who is a tough opponent and will be looking to make a statement at Couture’s expense.

Vera (1-0-0), who rose to fame as the winner of the Muay Thai-themed “Fight Girls” reality show, engaged in one of the best female fights of 2009 when she defeated Leslie Smith at Bellator Fighting Championships 7 in May.

Much like her husband, UFC contender Brandon “The Truth” Vera, Kerry’s striking is superb and she is focused on improving with each passing day.

While Couture is moonlighting in wrestling angles that make no sense, Vera will be diligently preparing for her November 20th Strikeforce debut and will be aiming to knock Couture out. If Couture’s recent antics continue, it may very well be the last time that anyone sees her in MMA.

Vera is not a fighter to be taken lightly and it appears as though Couture may find that out the hard way when she meets her at Strikeforce Challengers 5.
