Ana Maria Submits Maria Elisabete Tavares At Web Fight Combat 2Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Ana Maria “India” earned her third straight victory tonight in a featured matchup at Web Fight Combat 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The highly-skilled grappler submitted veteran striker Maria Elisabete “Beth” Tavares with her signature armbar late in the opening round.

Maria returned to MMA in May after a three-year hiatus from competition and she has quickly regained her standing as one of Brazil’s top female fighters. After a tentative start to tonight’s bout, Maria took Tavares down to the mat and used a slick transition to set up the fight-ending submission.

Maria (5-4-0) and Tavares (4-4-1) traded cautious strikes in the opening three minutes. The southpaw Maria landed lead right hooks and Tavares countered with one-twos. She punched her way into a clinch, but Maria reversed against the cage and took Tavares down soon after. She held Tavares against the cage and passed to mount. Tavares tried to kick off of the cage to escape, but Maria used the scramble opportunity to set up an armbar. She rolled through and pulled back on Tavares’s arm, forcing Tavares to hastily tap out at the 4:11 mark of round one.

Of Maria’s five career wins, four have come by way of submission. All of her losses have come against high-level opponents including Invicta FC title contenders Vanessa Porto and Ediane Gomes.

Winner: Ana Maria by Submission (Armbar) at 4:11 of round one. She improves to 5-4-0.
