MMARising.com Interview With Sarah Kaufman, Part II

Sarah Kaufman, Part II

Interview by Robert Sargent

In part two of our exclusive interview, MMARising.com speaks again with Hardcore Championship Fighting Women's Bantamweight Champion Sarah Kaufman, following her successful title defence against Molly Helsel this past Saturday.

Sarah remains undefeated, now 7-0 with her TKO victory, and has solidified her place as the top female fighter in Canada.

Now that she has defended her title, Sarah looks ahead to future challenges.

Rob: First of all, congratulations on your successful HCF Women's Bantamweight title defence this past Saturday against Molly Helsel. Could you give us your thoughts on the fight and how you adapted your game plan once the bell rang?

Sarah: Thank you. It was a really fun fight! Once the bell rang, the fight went as I expected it to; Molly came out a little slower than I thought she might, but then mostly stood up with me. A few times, she tried to take the fight to the ground, but I think I executed my game plan well, and came out with the win.

Rob: As in your past fights, you really overwhelmed Molly with strikes in the second round, handing her the first TKO loss of her career. Was there any point in the fight where you were in any danger at all?

Sarah: You always have to be cautious while fighting, because the fight could change with one punch or submission attempt, but I felt very confident and comfortable throughout the fight.

Rob: Having now competed against fighters with a variety of strengths and backgrounds, is there any one type of fighter, stylistically, that you feel would be the most challenging to face? Perhaps a highly-skilled striker, like yourself?

Sarah: I think that every skilled fighter has the potential to be very challenging...whether she is a good striker, wrestler or grappler, she will provide a different challenge in each fight for me.

Rob: Looking forward to your future in HCF, what challenges do you see ahead of you in the next year, and what is one thing that you are determined to accomplish within the next 12 months?

Sarah: I would like to fight as many times as possible, as long as I am healthy and able.

Rob: If given the opportunity at some point in the future, would you like to compete in an all-female tournament, such as those held in Japan in SmackGIRL, or are you focused on growing your career one title defence at a time?

Sarah: I am open to whatever my coach, Adam Zugec, wants me to do.

Rob: If you could fight any female fighter in your weight class, regardless of which promotion they currently compete for, who would it be and why?

Sarah: I honestly don't know. I think that the 135lb division is so big, and there are many experienced and talented fighters in it.

Rob: Are there any particular opponents whom you feel would skyrocket your career with a victory? Perhaps BodogFIGHT Women's Bantamweight Champion Tara LaRosa or the poster girl for MMA in the United States right now, Gina Carano?

Sarah: I think that any fight that I participate in that is exciting to watch will help advance my career. My goal as a fighter is to fight to the best of my ability and have people excited to watch me fight.

Rob: At present, do you know when you will next be competing or whom your opponent will be?

Sarah: I hope to be fighting in May, but am not yet certain of the details.

Rob: What are three things that you feel are imperative to the growth of female mixed martial arts in the next two years?

Sarah: 1. Continue to have exciting female fights to bring more awareness and interest to the females.

2. Try to encourage promoters to pay both male and female fighters equal purses, as an incentive for more females to get involved in MMA.

3. Have more promotions establish legitimate/substantial women's divisions.

Rob: Congratulations once again on your successful title defence, and thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. Any final thoughts or comments?

Sarah: Thank you again. I want to thank everyone who helped me get ready for this fight...Adam Zugec, my training partners at ZUMA, Impact Fight Clothing, Vito Brancaccio. Also, I want to thank Molly for coming to fight, and I hope that everyone who saw/will see the fight enjoys watching it!

MMARising.com once again sincerely thanks Sarah for her time for this interview and congratulates her on her successful title defence.
