Long-time pound-for-pound queen Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii will look to rebound from the first defeat of her career when she faces Emi Fujino at Sengoku Raiden Championship: “Soul of Fight” on December 30th. Fujii most recently lost a controversial decision to Zoila Frausto in Bellator.

MMARising.com confirmed plans for the Fujii-Fujino matchup with a source close to the fight on Sunday and the promotion will officially announce the bout today. Fujino is coming off of a 24-second victory in late November at Valkyrie 8, which ended the first losing streak of her career.

Fujii (22-1-0) was seen by most as the favourite to win the inaugural Bellator 115-pound women’s tournament, and appeared to have done enough to become Bellator’s first women’s champion in the final, but found herself on the wrong end of a contentious Split Decision. Using superior boxing and a late takedown, Fujii looked to have outpointed Frausto, but two judges felt otherwise and awarded the victory to the outspoken American.

While she did not understand the decision and felt that she had done enough to win, Fujii has tried to move on from the fight and the loss; her first in 23 bouts across a storied career. Once entertaining thoughts of retirement, the defeat reignited Fujii’s passion for competition and she is eager to prove that she is still a dominant force in the women’s division. Fujii will now make her return to action in Japan for the December 30th bout with Fujino, who was once one of the country’s top female prospects.

Fujino (9-4-0) opened her career with eight straight victories including a win over current Valkyrie champ Mei “V Hajime” Yamaguchi. Fights against larger opponents Megumi Yabushita and “Windy” Tomomi Sunaba ended in defeats for Fujino, however, and she suffered two additional losses in a rematch with Yamaguchi and a battle with top Valkyrie contender Kyoko Takabayashi. The defeats dropped Fujino out of the Valkyrie title picture, but she has never been finished in her career and choked Anna Saito unconscious in just 24 seconds in her most recent fight.

Sengoku Raiden Championship: “Soul of Fight” takes place on December 30th at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan. Part of the all-day event may air live on HDNet, but no official announcements have been made as of yet. The network is expected to air segments of the card over the course of multiple days.
