Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that rising star Angela Magana has signed with the promotion and will participate in the upcoming Bellator 115-pound women’s tournament. Magana is the fifth announced signing, joining Megumi Fujii, Rosi Sexton, Lisa Ward and Jessica Pene.
Magana has won five of her last seven fights since a controversial loss to Jessica “Jag” Aguilar in March of 2008. She advanced to the finals of the 2009 HOOKnSHOOT/GFight Women’s Grand Prix before dropping a Unanimous Decision to England’s Lisa Higo.
Magana (8-4-0) had previously been scheduled to face Sexton at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 37 in May, but was forced to withdraw due to injury. The New Mexico native was later rumoured for the revived Ultimate Women’s Challenge competition, but will now step back into the cage in August for Bellator. Magana has already faced some of the top 115-pound female fighters in the world and is the only woman to have ever beaten reigning FCF champ Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez.
Magana joins an impressive tournament lineup that already features pound-for-pound queen Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii, top-ranked British star Rosi Sexton, submission ace Lisa Ward and undefeated divisional standout Jessica Pene. As first reported by MMARising.com yesterday, Elena “Babydoll” Reid, originally scheduled to be part of the tournament, has been forced to withdraw due to a pair of serious knee injuries. Jessica Aguilar, whom Magana has faced on three occasions and holds one victory over, is likely to be confirmed for the Bellator tournament in the near future.
