Michelle Waterson Wins At Extreme Beatdown 6It took just 15 seconds for rising women’s MMA star Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson to return to her winning ways tonight at Extreme Beatdown 6 in New Town, North Dakota. Waterson submitted MMA debutant Rosary “Ro” Califano with a flying armbar in the first round.

The win was an impressive one for Waterson, who dropped down in weight after her one-sided defeat to former WIBA and IFBA Flyweight Champion Elena “Babydoll” Reid in April. However, she may have trouble finding competition at 105 pounds, as the division is limited outside of Japan.

After a very brief striking exchange, Waterson (7-3-0) leapt into a flying armbar that caught everyone – particularly Califano – completely off-guard. Before Califano (0-1-0) had a chance to react, she was forced to tap out, giving Waterson a lightning-fast victory. The result marked the fifth time that Waterson has won by submission.

Califano was originally scheduled to make her MMA debut against the ever-controversial Angelica Chavez at an event in New Mexico last November, but was removed from the card for allegedly having too much experience. Chavez (3-0-0) went on to controversially defeat Alyx Luck, but it marked the second straight fight where a hometown referee had stopped the fight without Chavez’s opponent tapping or being in any danger. Chavez has been all but exiled from the MMA community since.

While Califano’s debut against Waterson did not turn out to be successful, she has worked diligently to improve her skills over the past year and has put the drama surrounding the Chavez fight in the past. For Waterson, this victory puts her back on the winning track and she will look to follow up on the success later in 2010.
