WEC 43 Moved To October 10th

by Robert Sargent

After the event was postponed earlier this week due to an injury to main event participant Benson "Smooth" Henderson, World Extreme Cagefighting has rescheduled its WEC 43 event for October 10th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The event, which was originally set to take place on September 2nd at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, will still retain all of its scheduled fights.

The main event pits Henderson against former title challenger Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in a WEC Interim Lightweight Championship bout that will determine the next opponent for WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie "The Worm" Varner, who is still recovering from injury.

Also on the card, undefeated lightweight standout Dave Jansen (12-0-0) will battle former title challenger Rich "Cleat" Crunkilton (16-2-0) in what could easily be the Fight of the Night.

Speculation had risen as to the future of the WEC after the initial announcement of the event's postponement, as recent reports have mentioned that the promotion may merge with its Zuffa-owned partner, the UFC, in the near future. This was brought on by comments from UFC President Dana White that suggested that the UFC may run as many as three events per month in 2010, which would presumably require additional fighters from the talent-rich WEC.

However, WEC officials clarified that the promotion would not be folding and plans were made for future events, so it appears as though World Extreme Cagefighting will be around for some time to come.
