Kenny Florian Defeats Joe Lauzon

UFC Fight Night 13 Results

by Robert Sargent

Compiling the best Fight Night card to date, UFC's Fight Night 13 was an excellent event, with Thiago "Pitbull" Alves stopping Karo "The Heat" Parisyan, and Kenny "KenFlo" Florian defeating Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon in the main event.

Earlier in the night, "The Sandman" James Irvin knocked out Houston "The Assassin" Alexander in just eight seconds with, of all things, a Superman Punch.

Kenny "KenFlo" Florian vs Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon

Florian came away with a victory in this bout, but with a previous loss to Sean Sherk and as close to zero chance of defeating BJ Penn as possible, it seems highly unlikely that he will ever claim the UFC Lightweight Championship, leaving this as a disappointing ending.

Lauzon opened up round one with punches, then went for a trip takedown. Florian unleashed a series of elbow strikes to the top of Lauzon's head - many of which were deemed illegal and the referee stood the fight back up - that cut Lauzon. Back on the feet, Florian landed two hard kicks and Lauzon replied with a pair of punches. Florian scored a takedown and moved to side-control. Lauzon squirmed free and got back to his feet, then scored a takedown of his own.

After a scramble, Lauzon moved to side-control and then worked for a kneebar, then a heel hook. Florian escaped the heel hook and managed to get back to his feet, then took Lauzon's back. Florian attempted a takedown, but Lauzon wound up on top. He went for a heel hook once again, but Florian escaped danger and landed a couple of punches from the top before the bell.

Florian landed a series of kicks to begin the second round, with Lauzon countering with punches. Florian scored a takedown and landed in side-control, then moved to mount. He landed a flurry of punches from the top, as Lauzon was unable to buck out to escape. Lauzon eventually managed to use his legs to push Florian off, but Florian maintained side-control and quickly got mount again. Following two more scrambles, Lauzon's efforts to escape did not bring success and, though he blocked almost all damage from Florian's strikes, he was doing nothing more than covering up.

The referee finally stopped the fight and the crowd booed Florian as the winner.

Winner: Kenny Florian by TKO (Unanswered Strikes) at 3:28 of round two. He improves to 9-3-0.

Thiago "Pitbull" Alves vs Karo "The Heat" Parisyan

Just as Parisyan seemed to once again be one victory away from a title shot, his path was derailed for a second time, this time at the hands (and knee) of Alves.

Following a brief striking exchange, Parisyan scored a takedown, but Alves eventually escaped and got back to his feet. Parisyan attempted another takedown, but could not get Alves back down. Alves threw a few punches while Parisyan landed dozens of punches and kicks, making use of his reach advantage. Alves tried to land harder strikes, but Parisyan went for a takedown. After a clinch against the cage, Alves broke free and attempted a pair of kicks, with Parisyan replying with two quick punches and a high kick. Alves landed a body kick and two stiff punches, then defended a Parisyan takedown attempt before the bell.

Parisyan opened up round two with a high kick and a quick punching combination. After a second combination from Parisyan, Alves used a Thai clinch and drilled Parisyan with a knee. Parisyan collapsed to the ground, with Alves landing four more follow-up punches, and the referee stopped the fight. Parisyan tried to protest the stoppage, but he was clearly out and it was a good call.

Winner: Thiago Alves by TKO (Knee & Punches) at 0:34 of round two. He improves to 14-3-0.

Matt "The Hammer" Hamill vs Tim "The Barbarian" Boetsch

Hamill, in his first fight back after being completely robbed by inept judges in his fight with Michael Bisping, finished off Boetsch in the second round with a barrage of punches.

After a trio of jabs, Hamill scored a takedown and pushed Boetsch against the cage. Hamill moved to half-guard and landed sparse strikes, but the referee eventually stood both fighters back up. The fighters exchanged kicks, then Boetsch looked for an uppercut and clinched. He landed a pair of knees and attempted a high kick. Boetsch continued to try uppercuts, then landed another knee. Both fighters continued to land punches, and Boetsch finished the exchange with a huge knee to the jaw of Hamill. Hamill landed punches and Boetsch landed one more knee before the end of the close round.

Boetsch opened up round two with knees, kicks and punches, much the same way he had done when dismantling David Heath, but Hamill threw back a number of punches as well. Hamill attempted a high kick and fell, and Boetsch landed a hard right hand. Boetsch then tried for a takedown, but Hamill ended up on top and landed a series of strikes to the head of Boetsch. Hamill took mount and continued to rain down strikes, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Winner: Matt Hamill by TKO (Strikes) at 1:25 of round two. He improves to 4-1-0.

Nate Diaz vs Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino

After surviving an onslaught from Pellegrino in round one, Diaz rebounded in the second round and slapped on a fight-ending triangle choke for the victory.

Pellegrino scored a quick takedown and immediately looked to take Diaz's back. After a couple of scrambles, Pellegrino wound up in Diaz's guard against the cage. He unleashed a series of punches from the top, then moved to side-control and pinned down both of Diaz's arms. Pellegrino then scored with more than a dozen rapid-fire punches to the face of Diaz, cutting him above the right eye. Pellegrino took Diaz's back and looked for a rear naked choke, but Diaz escaped and landed knees and punches against the cage for the remainder of the round.

Diaz pushed the pace with striking early in round two, but Pellegrino scored a takedown and landed punches and elbows from the top. Diaz looked for a Kimura on Pellegrino's right arm, but Pellegrino escaped. After a brief exchange on the ground, Diaz got back to his feet and took Pellegrino down with a hip toss. Pellegrino quickly took Diaz's back, however, forcing Diaz to push off of the cage. From the bottom, Diaz quickly locked in a triangle choke and, after giving a double middle-finger salute to the camera, forced Pellegrino to submit.

Winner: Nate Diaz by Submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:06 of round two. He improves to 9-2-0.

"The Sandman" James Irvin vs Houston "The Assassin" Alexander

This fight ended almost as quickly as it began, as Irvin lived up to his moniker by putting Alexander to sleep with a punch mere seconds into the fight.

After a touching of gloves, Irvin launched a Superman Punch just five seconds into the fight, dropping Alexander. Irvin followed it up with three more punches on the ground and the referee stopped the fight. Just like that, the Houston Alexander hype train is finished.

Winner: James Irvin by TKO (Superman Punch) at 0:08 of round one. He improves to 14-4-0, 1 NC.

Gray "The Bully" Maynard vs Frankie "The Answer" Edgar

In this battle of two fighters with no professional losses, Maynard came out on top, handing Edgar the first defeat of his career.

After an early striking exchange, Edgar attempted a takedown, but Maynard defended. Maynard continued to dominate most of the striking exchanges for the next few minutes, with Edgar turning to quick flurries and head kicks. Maynard scored a takedown with two minutes remaining, but Edgar got back to his feet. Maynard got another takedown and landed some hooking punches from the top. Edgar got back to his feet once again, but Maynard continued to win the striking battles before the bell.

Maynard began faking takedown attempts in round two, following them up with hooking left punches. Edgar attempted a takedown, but Maynard defended and scored a takedown of his own. Edgar got back to his feet and began landing punches in combinations. Maynard came back with punches of his own and Edgar scored a hip toss takedown. Maynard immediately got back to his feet, then continued to get the better of the striking before taking Edgar down once again. Edgar looked for a Kimura, but Maynard held on.

After a pair of hard punches and a scramble, Maynard scored the first of his many takedowns in round three. Edgar promptly got back up and tried for a takedown himself, but Maynard put him on the ground a second time. After Edgar got back to his feet again, Maynard slammed him down to the canvas. This continued for another minute, but Edgar did manage to land some good strikes on the feet. However, Maynard scored another slam takedown and landed strikes from the top for the rest of the round.

Winner: Gray Maynard by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 5-0-0, 1 NC.

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson vs Tommy "The Farmboy" Speer

Johnson rebounded from his submission loss to Rich Clementi in highly impressive fashion, completely and totally dominating Speer and knocking him out in under a minute.

Johnson opened up with a leg kick and a high kick that put Speer off-balance. Johnson stuffed a takedown attempt from Speer and drilled him with a left hook, dazing Speer and putting him on the defensive. Johnson landed more punches, then dropped Speer with a head kick that almost ended the fight. A knee from Johnson and a punching combination left Speer stumbling backwards into the cage, where the final punch of a six-punch combination froze Speer in place, crumpled in a heap in the corner.

Winner: Anthony Johnson by KO (Punches) at 0:51 of round one. He improves to 5-1-0.

Undercard Fights:
"The Dentist" Josh Neer defeated Din "Dinyero" Thomas by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 24-6-1.

Marcus "Maximus" Aurelio defeated Ryan "Are You Ready?" Roberts by Submission (Armbar) at 0:16 of round one. He improves to 16-5-0.

Manny "The Anvil" Gamburyan defeated "The Grinder" Jeff Cox by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 1:41 of round one. He improves to 8-2-0.

Clay "The Carpenter" Guida defeated Samy "The Dog" Schiavo by TKO (Strikes) at 4:15 of round one. He improves to 23-9-0.

George Sotiropoulos defeated Roman "The Emperor" Mitichyan by TKO (Strikes) at 2:24 of round two. He improves to 9-2-0.

Just as it appeared on paper, UFC Fight Night 13 was definitely the best Fight Night to date, and is hopefully a sign of things to come from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
