Jason 'Mayhem' Miller victorious

HDNet Fights "Reckless Abandon" Results

by Robert Sargent

Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg were both victorious in an action-packed night at HDNet Fights "Reckless Abandon," setting up a rematch between the two in the near future.

Miller was forced to endure a long and hard-fought battle with Kennedy, while Trigg made short work of Edwin Dewees with a quick submission.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller vs Tim Kennedy

The eccentric Miller survived a poor first round and came back to defeat Kennedy, avenging a previous loss to Kennedy from 2003.

Kennedy took Miller down early in the first round and, shortly thereafter, landed a knee which appeared to strike Miller in the chest. However, the referee saw otherwise, and restarted the action on the feet after warning Kennedy for an apparent illegal knee to the head of the downed Miller. Not to be deterred, Kennedy landed a solid one-two combination as Miller stepped in striking, halting Miller's momentum. Kennedy took Miller back down and moved to side control, then briefly to mount. Miller tried to defend, but Kennedy took his back shortly before the end of the round.

Round two began similarly to the first, with Kennedy again taking Miller down and quickly taking his back. After landing strikes, Kennedy sunk in both hooks and momentarily locked on a rear naked choke. Miller escaped and reversed position, then landed two vicious elbows from side control, badly cutting Kennedy on the bridge of the nose. Kennedy worked for a takedown, but it was Miller who took Kennedy down before the end of the round.

Miller came out with a takedown to begin the third round, with Kennedy attempting a heel hook to counter. Blood from the cut on Kennedy's nose was streaming into his eye, limiting his vision. After a brief halt, the fight was allowed to continue. Kennedy got a takedown and later worked for an armbar, then an omoplata, but neither worked and Miller continued to punish the nose and face of Kennedy with punches. Miller landed a series of punches and elbows from side control just before the end of the round to take the round and the fight. Miller wins by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg vs Edwin "Babyface" Dewees

Trigg made short work of the young but experienced Dewees, submitting him early in the first round.

Trigg set the pace early on, as Dewees tried to hit and move with wild head kick attempts. Trigg went for a kick of his own, but Dewees caught it and took Trigg down. However, Trigg quickly applied a Kimura from bottom position and rolled Dewees over. Dewees tapped out and Trigg is the winner by Submission (Kimura) at 1:40 of round one. The victory sets up a Trigg rematch with Jason Miller, whom he defeated by TKO last December.

Yves Edwards vs Alonzo Martinez

Edwards won this battle of veteran fighters, securing his second victory in the past six weeks, after submitting Martinez in the middle of the second round.

Martinez came out striking early on, but Edwards calmly evaded the strikes and set up combinations of his own. Martinez pulled guard and Edwards quickly moved to side control. Martinez reversed position and got into Edwards's butterfly guard. Edwards reversed and the fight was stood back up soon after. After a moment of inaction in the clinch, Edwards slipped during an exchange and Martinez jumped into top position and moved to half-guard. Martinez landed punches and other strikes for the duration, winning the round in the process.

The second round began with Edwards landing a right hook that rocked Martinez. Edwards landed ground and pound strikes until Martinez reversed position and rolled him over. Edwards reversed again and got mount position, before taking Martinez's back and eventually sinking in a rear naked choke. Edwards wins by Submission (rear naked choke) at 3:04 of round two.

"The Polish Experiment" Krzysztof Soszynski vs Robert Villegas

This highly bizarre fight ended with Villegas suffering his second career loss, with both coming by disqualification.

Villegas landed a series of leg kicks in the opening minute, with Soszynski countering with punching combinations. Villegas landed a low blow kick and the fight was temporarily halted. After it resumed, Villegas resumed his leg kick striking, with a lengthy punching exchange ending the first round.

Villegas tried to pull guard in the beginning of the second round, likely to preserve energy, but Soszynski stood back up and escaped a kneebar attempt. Soszynski then rushed Villegas and took him down, then landed a left hook to Villegas's midsection and stood up and walked away. Villegas, visibly exhausted, flopped to his back and refused to stand back up two times in a row, to which the referee gave him a stern warning. Soszynski landed another punch and Villegas flopped to his back once again, resulting in a disqualification. This strange fight ends with Soszynski as the winner by DQ (Refusal To Fight) at 3:15 of round two.

"The Secret Weapon" Pete Spratt vs Tristan "Too Much For You" Yunker

UFC veteran Spratt made it two victories in two months, as he defeated Yunker early in the first round after opening up a bad cut above Yunker's eye.

Spratt landed two hard right hands early in the fight, forcing Yunker to go for a takedown. Spratt escaped and got back to his feet, where he landed a series of rights that opened up the cut above Yunker's left eye. Yunker informed the referee that he could not see, and the bout was halted at 1:38 of round one. Spratt is the winner by TKO (cut).

Undercard Fights:
Other fights in the evening saw Corey Mahon defeat Chris Bowles by Submission (armbar) at 4:22 of round two, Nissen Osterneck defeated Freddie Espiricueta by Verbal Submission (strikes) at 2:37 of round one and Jay White quickly dispatched of Patrick Castillo by Submission (armbar) at 50 seconds of round one.

Preliminary bouts, contested under five three-minute round rules, saw Liam McCarty defeat Jason House by TKO (cut) at 3:00 of round three and Marcus Lanier defeated Lee King by Submission (armbar) at 2:58 of round two.

Excluding the bizarre fight between Soszynski and Villegas, this event was a solid one for HDNet Fights.
