Ben Rothwell & Elvis Sinosic Out Of UFC 110With just two days to go until UFC 110 in Australia, the card has suffered a pair of last-minute changes. Former IFL heavyweight standout “Big” Ben Rothwell has withdrawn from his bout with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović due to illness while hometown Australian star Elvis Sinosic has been sidelined with a shoulder injury and will no longer compete.

Sinosic’s scheduled rematch with Chris Haseman has been scrapped from the card. Filipović will face late-replacement Anthony “The Hippo” Perosh, who last competed in the Octagon at UFC 66 in 2006.

Rothwell (30-7-0) was looking to rebound after losing his UFC debut to Cain Velasquez at UFC 104, but he will no longer be able to compete on the debut UFC card in Australia. The nature of his illness was not disclosed. Rothwell’s last-minute removal from the card follows months of turbulent times for the UFC, which has been forced to scramble on numerous occasions due to fighter injuries and illnesses.

Filipović (25-7-2, 1 NC) will now face Perosh (10-5-0) in a replacement heavyweight bout on the card. Filipović, the 2006 PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix Champion, has met with limited success in the UFC and is coming off of a one-sided defeat to Junior “Cigano” dos Santos at UFC 103. The formerly feared striker has looked tentative since his shocking knockout loss to Gabriel “Napão” Gonzaga in 2007. Perosh has won four of his last five fights, but three of his losses have come by knockout.

Sinosic (8-11-2) and Haseman (20-16-0) first clashed back at Caged Combat 1 in 1997, with Haseman taking the victory via the then-popular chin to the eye technique. Haseman has fought just one time since 2004, while Sinosic has been inactive since a 2007 bout in Cage Rage. The planned rematch has been cancelled entirely after Sinosic suffered a shoulder injury.

UFC 110: “Nogueira vs Velasquez” will move ahead with nine fights. The event takes place this Saturday at the Acer Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and airs on pay-per-view.

  1. What a cop out, Elvis was looking for an excuse to get out of the fight with Haseman. A injured shoulder what a load of crap, he was just scared. Scared he was going to be flogged and finished by Australias best MMA fighter. Chris hasn’t had a fight for some time but could still deliver the goods and Elvis knew it. Maybe Elvis should take up netball or something and leave this sport for the real fighters.

  2. Haha, well it’s not a change that affects us viewers here in North America much, but I feel bad for the Australian fans who probably would have enjoyed the fight. It’s also unfortunate that the card has only nine fights now. Pretty lame situation.
