Bellator Women's Tournament Possible For AugustBellator Fighting Championships is reportedly planning to hold its first women’s tournament this year. Female boxing champion and undefeated mixed martial artist Elena “Babydoll” Reid stated earlier today that the promotion may begin a 115-pound women’s tournament in August.

Bellator previously announced tentative plans to hold an eight-woman 125-pound tournament that would feature divisional stars Rosi Sexton and Tara LaRosa. With the possible switch to a 115-pound format, Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii is rumoured to be participating.

Reid (4-0-0 MMA; 19-5-6 Boxing) announced her intentions to be a part of the proposed tournament in an interview with SportsGeeks Radio today. Both Sexton (10-1-0) and Fujii (19-0-0) will reportedly be a part of the tournament, with Sexton dropping down from 125 pounds to compete. LaRosa, who spent most of her career at 135 pounds before making the drop to 125, is no longer expected to compete in tournament action, but may still fight for Bellator in 2010. Other possible participants are not yet known.

Stating that she entered MMA to challenge the best, Reid understands that she will take a huge step up in competition in potential bouts with Sexton and Fujii, but the Arizona native will fight at least two additional times before August. Reid will defend her Sovereign Nations Women’s Flyweight Championship against Alyx “Miss” Luck in MMA action on April 17th in North Dakota and will then travel to France to challenge for a new women’s boxing title on June 5th.

Bellator Fighting Championships begins its second 12-week season at Bellator 13 on April 8th. The promotion’s third season is set to begin at Bellator 25 on August 12th, with the August date likely serving as the start of the planned women’s tournament.
