UFC Fight Night 66: "Edgar vs Faber" Results & RecapThe Ultimate Fighting Championship came to Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines tonight for UFC Fight Night 66: “Edgar vs Faber.” The event was headlined by a five-round featherweight showdown between Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and “The California Kid” Urijah Faber.

Also on tonight’s card, Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi battled Costas Philippou in the middleweight co-feature. In other action at 185 pounds, fan favourite Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz competed for the final time in his mixed martial arts career against Luke “Bigslow” Barnatt.

 

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar vs “The California Kid” Urijah Faber

Round 1:
Edgar landed a short uppercut early in round one and he followed with a left-right combo. More punches scored for Edgar and Faber replied with an overhand right. Both fighters landed right hooks and Edgar took Faber down. He maintained back control as Faber stood up and Faber was warned multiple times for grabbing the fence. Edgar dumped him to the mat very briefly and Faber circled away. Edgar kept the pressure on with quick right hands and body kicks in the final minute. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 2:
Faber opened round two with a knee and a now-bloodied Edgar fired back with an uppercut. He flurried with punches and finished with a head kick. Faber connected with an overhand right later in the round, but Edgar countered with one of his own that snapped Faber’s head back. More quick punches landed for Edgar and he continued to outstrike Faber as the round came to an end. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 3:
Faber fought off a clinch attempt and landed a left hook in round three. The fighters traded hooks to the body and Faber landed one to the jaw. Edgar scored with a liver kick and he took Faber down. Edgar passed to side control to escape from a guillotine choke and he took Faber’s back on the way up. He slammed Faber down again and Faber battled back to his feet. Edgar secured another takedown and he tried to move to mount. Faber stood and ate a series of punches on the way up. The fighters traded quick strikes before the bell. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 4:
Edgar countered Faber’s aggression with stiff jabs and a combination in the fourth round. Both men kicked to the body and Edgar flurried with quick punches. A one-two landed for Edgar and he fought off a takedown attempt. Seconds later, Edgar dumped Faber to the mat and immediately transitioned to back control. Faber stood and Edgar landed knees to the thighs. Faber spun free and he landed a short left hook. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 5:
Edgar put together combinations of quick punches in the final round and Faber came up short with his counters. A nice uppercut scored for Edgar and he took Faber’s back before throwing him to the mat. Faber scrambled back to his feet and he landed a combination. Edgar replied with an uppercut and a right hook. Faber thwarted a takedown attempt and the fighters traded hard punches. Edgar narrowly missed with a spinning hook kick in the dying seconds. 10-9 Edgar.

Winner: Frankie Edgar by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) after five rounds. He improves to 19-4-1.

 

Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi vs Costas Philippou

Round 1:
Mousasi took Philippou down in the opening round and he landed short strikes from the top in half-guard. Philippou scrambled and attempted an armbar from his back, but Mousasi punched free. He looked to set up an arm-triangle choke, but Philippou defended. Mousasi kept him pinned down on the mat and he attempted another arm-triangle choke before the bell. 10-9 Mousasi.

Round 2:
Mousasi scored another takedown early in round two, but this time Philippou got back to his feet. He jabbed and Mousasi countered with looping hooks. Time was called after Philippou was kicked in the groin. Action resumed and Mousasi easily took him down. He attempted a kimura from the top and landed short right hands. In the final minute, Mousasi scored with elbows and hammerfists from the top. 10-9 Mousasi.

Round 3:
Quick jabs were exchanged early in the final round and Mousasi kicked at Philippou’s lead leg. Philippou landed lead left hooks, but Mousasi responded by taking him down. He worked from the top in Philippou’s guard and landed ground and pound. In the final 90 seconds, Mousasi passed to half-guard and he continued to pepper Philippou with punches and elbows until time expired. 10-9 Mousasi.

Winner: Gegard Mousasi by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 37-5-2.

 

Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz vs Luke “Bigslow” Barnatt

Round 1:
Munoz landed a nice right hand early on and Barnatt countered with jabs and a knee. Munoz took him down and fought off a guillotine choke attempt. Barnatt stood, but Munoz dragged him down again. The fight returned to the feet and Munoz stunned Barnatt with a big combination. He took Barnatt down and ragdolled him to the mat again soon after. Huge punches scored for Munoz as he teed off from the top. Back on the feet, Barnatt secured a brief takedown, but Munoz stood and cracked him with an overhand right. 10-9 Munoz.

Round 2:
Munoz closed the distance and worked for a takedown against the cage in round two. Barnatt defended with elbows and broke free from Munoz’s grasp. Munoz got him down soon after, but Barnatt battled back to his feet. He landed a hard knee to the body and followed with another one. Munoz clinched and Barnatt fought off another takedown. An overhand right landed for Munoz shortly before the bell. 10-9 Barnatt.

Round 3:
Munoz countered a knee with a pair of overhand rights in the final round. Barnatt stuffed a takedown, but Munoz backed him up with a right hook and he swarmed with more punches. Munoz dragged Barnatt down and he landed punches on the way up. Barnatt scored with slashing elbows, but Munoz pulled him to the mat again. Barnatt stood and Munoz cracked him with a combination. He bloodied Barnatt with punches and dragged him down to the ground. Barnatt rose to his feet and Munoz secured a rolling takedown. He landed diving punches before the end of the fight. 10-9 Munoz.

Winner: Mark Munoz by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 14-6-0.

 

Neil Magny vs Hyun Gyu “The Ace” Lim

Round 1:
Lim just missed with an early flying knee, but he dropped Magny with a right hook and a running knee seconds later. Magny stood and covered up as Lim teed off with punches and knees. Magny clinched and landed short strikes in close while buying time to recover. He eventually hopped on Lim’s back and tried to drag him to the mat. Lim shook him off, but wound up on the bottom. He attempted an armbar and Magny punched free. He mounted Lim, then took his back and worked for a rear-naked choke. The fighters stood and Magny landed punches and knees. 10-9 Magny.

Round 2:
Magny slammed Lim down to the mat in round two and he landed punches from the top in S-mount. Lim rolled over and Magny flattened him out. He landed a series of unanswered punches from the top until the fight was stopped.

Winner: Neil Magny by TKO (Punches) at 1:24 of round two. He improves to 15-3-0.

 

Phillipe “Super” Nover vs Yui Chul “The Korean Bulldozer” Nam

Round 1:
Nover scored a pair of brief takedowns early on and he pinned Nam against the fence after the fight returned to the feet. He scored more takedowns as the round progressed and punished Nam with hammerfists each time Nam got back to his feet. Nover took Nam down once more late in the round and landed punches from the top. Nam stood and Nover finished the round with two standing elbows. 10-9 Nover.

Round 2:
Nover took Nam back down in round two and suplexed him to the mat a second time soon after. Nam escaped out the back and wound up on top in Nover’s guard. Nover worked for an armbar and a triangle choke from his back, but Nam blasted him with punches and Nover scrambled back to his feet. He attempted a takedown and eventually got Nam down briefly. Nam stood and scored a key takedown of his own. He punished Nover with hard shots from the top to steal the round. 10-9 Nam.

Round 3:
Nam scored two more takedowns in the final round and he moved to side control to escape from a Nover guillotine choke attempt. He mounted Nover, but Nover kicked him off and tried to get back to his feet. Nam landed a big right hand and looked to set up an arm-triangle choke on the ground, but the cage prevented him from passing to side control. Nover defended against the arm-triangle choke until the final seconds of the round when Nam mounted him and dropped punches from the top. 10-9 Nam.

Winner: Phillie Nover by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 11-5-1.

 

Levan “The Hornet” Makashvili vs Mark Eddiva

Round 1:
Makashvili landed a nice right hook early on that forced Eddiva to backpedal and he trapped Eddiva in a front headlock soon after. The fighters battled for position in a clinch until Makashvili slammed Eddiva to the mat. Eddiva stood and the referee called for a break after a lull in the action. Makashvili landed another hard right hand and Eddiva responded with leg kicks. Makashvili secured a late takedown and punched from the top, but Eddiva escaped to his feet before the bell. 10-9 Makashvili.

Round 2:
Makashvili mixed things up with right hands and kicks to the upper and lower body in round two. Both fighters attempted takedowns, but neither one could get the other down. Makashvili eventually took Eddiva down in spite of Eddiva’s blatant fence grab, but little transpired on the mat and the fighters were stood up. Makashvili connected with a right hand and worked for another takedown in the final minute. 10-9 Makashvili.

Round 3:
In the first two minutes of the final round, Makashvili took Eddiva down three times. He kept him down on the third try and moved to side control. Eddiva initiated a scramble and battled back to his feet. Makashvili flurried to the head and body and took Eddiva down once more. He looked to transition to back control, but Eddiva defended and rose to one knee. He ate a series of right hands before returning to his feet late in the round. 10-9 Makashvili.

Winner: Levan Makashvili by Split Decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 7-1-0.

 

Undercard Fights:

– Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck defeated Tae Hyun “The Supernatural” Bang by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:56 of round one. He improves to 9-2-0 with the win.

– “Ragin'” Kajan Johnson defeated Lipeng “The Warrior” Zhang by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 20-11-1 with the win.

– Jingliang “The Leech” Li defeated Dhiego Lima by KO (Punches) at 1:25 of round one. He improves to 10-3-0 with the win.

– Guangyou “Smasher” Ning defeated Royston Wee by TKO (Punches & Elbows) at 4:59 of round two. He improves to 5-2-1 with the win.

– Jon “The Heat” delos Reyes defeated Roldan “The Executioner” Sangcha-an by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:13 of round two. He improves to 8-4-0 with the win.

– Zhikui “The Conquerer” Yao defeated Nolan Ticman by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 2-2-0 with the win.
